Charlotte, NC. I’m a winter weather nut living in a warm climate in North Carolina, and neither of those is going to change
You mean you don't like the coldest wind chill in NFL history and snowjams in Atlanta? 😎

I’d say the icon is fine with the single rain drop, but “chance” or “likely” type wording needs to be along with the expected precipitation type and intensity. NWS example here

Euro AI performed well. Vast majority of its runs kept the storm offshore (including this one, 06z Sep26 run comparison). I like it the best among the deterministic models (watch it a lot in the 0-10 day range for outdoor activities)

After a brutal June-July, it has been crazy nice of late (Aug-early Sep).

This winter has one of the bigger disconnects seen for troposphere vs. stratosphere Arctic Oscillation (AO) / Northern Annular Mode (NAM)
February 17, 2025 at 8:07 PM
Another good example of Strat NAM / Trop AO disconnect is 1979-1980 (late Dec to late Feb)

Now that you bring up analogs, the similarities with 1980-1981 are striking. Solar Max, +QBO, +PNA in Dec/Jan, a bit disconnected Strat and Trop in Dec/Jan. Strong Strat NAM into mid Jan, then weakening and SSW in early Feb

End of the Euro run may be the best-shaped boot pattern I've ever seen 😎

This is cool Amy. When I was first learning about the QBO, the black and white version from Free Univ Berlin helped me to understand the oscillation more than any other

Recorded 1.0 inch of snow on snow board from 1:40 to 2:40 AM tonight in mesoscale snow band. Fun ❄️

Don’t know when, but I WILL play golf at St Andrews before I die

Very nice thread Simon. Sharp and to the point. Thanks. The 100mb plot shows the temporary disconnect coming up over the next 2 weeks

Modeling in fair agreement in the extended range of significant jet extension via high pressure / cold surge working off East Asia - with the end result being a Moderate El Niño look in early December

Dang y’all got unlucky with this last storm on Thursday. It “Miller B’d” from Michigan to the Outer Banks in the severe confluence. Another house fell in the ocean at Rodanthe (shocker). Had a soaking rain here with temps in the 40’s

Cool, thanks. The QBO seems to be behaving properly with respect to temperatures. Cooler lower strat / higher tropopause height in first part of the yr (-QBO), then flip to warmer lower strat / lower tropopause height in 2nd half of yr (+QBO)

Saw some of the heaviest snow I’ve ever seen in early Jan 2017. Had to of been 2-3 per hour stuff for a bit there. Was just above the snow line with that one

Up close, firsthand account of rising water from the storm (Helene) along the Cane River, a secluded area just NW of Burnsville, NC near the NC/TN line

Been hot and humid in a lot of places of course, but something has been going on locally at RDU the past couple years - a bit of warm bias it seems, possibly related to excessive concrete and gravel around the sensor. Saw these posted. Link to sensor QC - weather.gladstonefamily.net

Thought about this the other day but didn't mention it...but the year this has reminded me of is 1986. Hot and dry. July was rough. I remember they had to truck in hay from other regions for cattle etc.
