If you look at his stats, he's a good comp for James Worthy. And 2 rings to Worthy's 3. But Worthy gets the publicity and Bobby doesn't.

I try to be nice on Bluesky. But this is ridiculous. Judge had an all-time hitting year far above "real good."

Judge outhit Cal by 200 OPS. So if Judge was just "real good," what is 200 points BELOW "real good."

I agree that Cal should win Most Valuable Catcher. But MVP is Judge.

He was borderline, but I think that he deserved HOF.

I'm not sure if this meant as a criticism of Gord. But I think it's cool that such a good song was historically accurate.

Record when giving up 0-2 runs:
10-5 Marquard
12-1 Mathewson

W-L is not a great stat (but not meaningless)

To (possibly) make this more complicated: What about the correlation between WAR and WAA? If it's a low correlation, then we'll have to some thinking about which one to use, WAR or WAA.

Fortunately, the correlation between WAR and WAA for the top 200 players in Rbat is:

+.0962 !
November 7, 2025 at 7:59 PM
If you prioritize WAR, which is more of a cumulative stat than WAA, then hits (a cumulative stat) is useful.
+0.698 WAR: H

But it's less useful is you prioritize WAA:
+0.502 WAA: H

Batting average is not very useful for WAR (+0.212) nor for WAA (+0.292)
November 7, 2025 at 7:52 PM
Additional: I replaced WAR with WAA (wins above AVERAGE) in my correlations.

+0.853 Rbat: WAA
Higher correlation that Rbat: WAA (+0.841), which makes since because Rbat is batting runs above AVERAGE (not replacement)

+0.502 WAA: H
Much lower than WAR: H (+0.698)

+0.292 WAA: BA
(+0.212 WAR: BA)
November 7, 2025 at 7:52 PM
What does all this tell us?

If you prioritize WAR as the best player evaluator, then you can have a conversation/debate with someone who prioritizes hits bc WAR and hits are highly correlated.

But WAR prioritizers should never debate with those who prioritize BA bc there's little common ground
November 7, 2025 at 7:38 PM
Finally, WAR: BA has the lowest correlation, though it is positive:
+0.212
November 7, 2025 at 7:38 PM
As we've seen, WAR: Hits is highly correlated (+0.698).

But WAR/PA: BA (Hits/AB) is less highly correlated:
+0.463 WAR/PA: BA(Hits/AB)

Rbat: BA (Hits/AB) is lower correlated still:
+0.332 (below +0.4 level)
November 7, 2025 at 7:38 PM
Surprisingly, Rbat (WAR's hitting component) was *not* as highly correlated with hits as WAR was with hits!
+0.500 Rbat: H

Rbat/PA also was *not* as highly correlated with BA (H/PA) as WAR with hits:
+0.526 Rbat/PA: BA

But Rbat/PA: BA is slightly more correlated than Rbat: H, which makes sense.
November 7, 2025 at 7:38 PM
WAR is also highly positively correlated with hits, although less so than Rbat: WAR (which makes sense):

+0.698 WAR: H

So players with a high total WAR likely have a high number of total hits. And vice versa.
November 7, 2025 at 7:38 PM
There's a high positive correlation between WAR and Rbat.

+0.841 Rbat: WAR

This makes since because hitting value (Rbat) is usually the main component of overall position-player value (WAR).
November 7, 2025 at 7:38 PM
Here's what I found:
Correlation:
+0.841 Rbat: WAR
+0.698 WAR: H
+0.526 Rbat/PA: BA
+0.500 Rbat: H
+0.463 WAR/PA: BA
+0.332 Rbat: BA
+0.212 WAR: BA

At one time, they were each considered the best ever at their position (although I always had Wilt > Russell).

Crazy college stats:

Career .694 TS%, including .722 and .747 last two years.

Shot 60%/59%/90% as a senior.

5th all-time in assists in NCAA history.

Led his conference in assists and steals all 4 years.

And both future first-ballot HOFers.

Phil Smith's doppelganger. Same first name, size, hometown (Bay Area), skills. Career points: 9931 vs. 9924.

Faced off in 1975 Finals.

40" vertical, iirc.

I hate to say this, but I'm not surprised: young Wilt, Moses, and Hayes were black holes. (Old Wilt was the opposite. )

Dodgers need to start Kershaw against him.
