This is so insane. Public education needs a massive boost, not cuts. Almost all non-gov schools are religiously affiliated in some way- why are we outsourcing education to religious orgs? Education is compulsory- we should have pride in and strengthen our secular public schools, not undermine them.

Sad new: John Shakespeare, my long time friend and colleague at the Sydney Morning Herald, who had retired after 39 years at the paper, died peacefully at home last night with his wife and son by his side. He was unwaveringly gracious and sanguine in the face of his prognosis, and loved by so many.

It is quite revealing which sectors get the favourable treatment such as $215bn gift from the govt of free gas to sell....
