Väestönkasvua suurempi ongelma on rikkaiden ylikulutus. Naturessa julkaistu tutkimus osoittaa, että vastuu planeetaristen rajojen ylittämisestä johtuu 50-90 prosenttisest kulutuksesta, josta vastaa 20% maailman ihmisistä, ml. kehittyneet ja kehitysmaat.
