How hard could a video game be to make, Michael?

Saw @mrholness.bsky.social Garth Marenghi’s show today — I had a spare copy of SIXTEEN HORSES in my car and nervously gave it to him during his signing of THIS BURSTED EARTH. My wife kept taking photos and caught the exact moment of my surprise when I was asked to sign his copy of my book in turn 😱❤️

Anyone been watching Alien: Earth? I’ve been thinking about monster design in general, and how the new monsters — especially the eyeball — remind me of the logic of The Thing. Worldbuilding, writing, other horrors, my work on No Man's Sky, and more within >> gregbuchanan.substack.com/p/aliens-and...
i have thoughts about aliens and eyeballs
Predators hunt. Xenomorphs infest. The Thing replaces... much like Alien: Earth's eyeball monster. Why all of this is scary, and how you can write the same.

Oh my god -- Alien: Earth Ep 5. Wow. Wow wow wow.

An Alien movie in a single hour, with better emotive depth than most stuff in franchise. Whoever had the idea to play 'We'll Meet Again' during certain parts, chef's kiss.

Babou Ceesay is exceptional -- really hope he gets All The Roles after this

Ren has been working on this in two of my game writing workshops -- really great to see it coming along!

I have signed on to write for a dream company this year — a very well-known setting I know an unusual amount about & a style that I’ve always been influenced by, so to officially work on it will be great!

In the meantime, I’ll soon be free for game writing / consulting - www.gregbuchanangames.com

I wrote said character in my adventure for the Dark Souls TTRPG, Eyes of Death (spoilers though, and you may not meet him…)

It was the funnest thing to feature and someone I beelined towards as soon as I got my hands on it
In Elden Ring there is a boss fight that is themed as this big fighting tournament. When you got to the boss the area you can summon several NPCs that you met and read about. One or them is a known cowardly weasel. You can summon them. They come in and immediately leave. Its so good

I feel like @docseuss.bsky.social @garyjkings.bsky.social @jon.inkle.co may have interesting opinions/examples to raise
Ok team — funniest -interactive- moments and jokes in games? Not cutscene based, prompted either by gameplay interaction or a choice

Examples:
- Portal 2’s asking you to press space to speak to confirm you don’t have brain damage, and jumping instead
- Baldur’s Gate 3 Volo Eye extraction

It is astonishing to realise that the thing you’re avoiding isn’t the thing that’s going to cause you pain — it’s avoidance itself already causing it, like a parasite. You only have a greater perception of pain when you think on the avoidance because the parasite is trying to protect itself

Highly recommend Greg's workshops to anyone interested in game writing or interactive fiction.

I learned lots from Greg and my peers duing the classes in terms of craft but they were also a revelation in terms of just creating art for the joy of it.

Great writing learnings as @gregbuchananwriter.com breaks down as little as 2 minutes of screen-time from Doctor Who that already shape a clear sense of character.

Amazing how much story can be packed into so little:
it wasn’t my cat! (and other dialogue secrets from doctor who)
What writers can learn from robots, queens, and tragically irrelevant cats

That horrible moment when the writing just stops? My emergency toolkit:
A) Dictate rambling thoughts into my phone.
B) Actual physical pen on actual paper (shocking!)
C) Flee to a cafe.
Changing the tools and the view often resets something. Brain-ish equivalent of turning a device off and on again

That's another class I can 100% recommend.

I learned loads from Greg and my classmates not just in terms of craft but also the creative process and how to deal with the struggles of trying to create art.

If you enjoy writing, you will get a lot from this class.

i shouted out greg's writing workshop during my GDC talk for a reason! i really like that it doesn't sell the idea that it will help you Get A Job. it's a course meant to help you add a piece to your portfolio, grow in community with others, and build your skills. definitely recommend!

This really resonated with my experience at similar events. Greg knows what he's talking about and has the history to back it up!

As he points out, not all events are created equal- I can’t justify the cost of GDC atm... so I’m excited to meet people at Reboot Develop in April! (I still have fomo)

A great article by @gregbuchananwriter.com on improving your own writing, demistifying what geting better at writing entails without relying on what is perceived as innate talent.

Pro tip — for almost any problem you’re interested in solving, don’t google it, google the term and just add the word “Reddit” after it. You’ll find a lot more in the results — not directly useful, but more useful than the actual Google algorithm’s results or a search in Reddit’s own site search
