Lifelong green lefty. Working class. Vegan. Research on German Left Party.
I recently returned to playing music after 40 years. It's been joyous and transforming in so many ways. Here's a blog post reflecting on that early music journey. Looking back I realise how privileged I was to have had that experience.

giving up music – reflecting on a musical journey
Following a forty-year hiatus from playing music, I look back fondly at the instruments, joys and struggles on a musical journey.

I just love those silhouettes of Sherlock Holmes on the Baker Street Station walls - so simple but so effective!

There’s a direct connection between the Southport riots and Elon Musk. Not that he knows or cares. My column www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/media/...
Elon Musk’s misinformation machine made the horrors of Southport much worse
The X owner’s commitment to free speech absolutism contributed to a whirlwind of false reporting around the perpetrator’s identity. Why does he seem to care so little about the truth?

The story of how the second-hand guitar I played as a child is one of my most cherished possessions today. And some of the life lessons along the way: learning to 'make do', deal with humiliation and value difference.

from jumble sale find to treasured possession: the story of my lovely old guitar
Life lessons with a much-cherished second-hand guitar. From early economic realities and humiliating performances to the joy of music and learning to appreciate imperfections and difference.

A piece of history that's always fascinated me. The picnic and sudden interest in mushroom hunts near the border; the guards who *seemed* not to see. Often overlooked, hugely important.

Just found this podcast. It sheds light on grave, urgent questions and raises many more. The description of how leftists end up on the right and, in particular, the characterisation of the growing fascist movement are fascinating - and genuinely frightening. Essential listening.

A powerful book read in 2023:
Tamons Geschichte (German transl.; orig. Japanese; Engl: The Boy and the Dog) by Seishu Hase. The story of Tamon, a dog, and his resilience, determination and loyalty. And the tragedy, betrayal and violence among the humans who accompany him on his mysterious journey.💙📚

Many moons ago I read a book review, found it intriguing... and promptly forgot both author and title. Luckily, from my vague description, a bookseller identified the book as Slow Horses. In 2023 I've read the whole series and, despite the guilt over binge reading, have loved every single book. 💙📚

A month of #AcWriMoments - how did it work out?

Avoiding quantitative targets was right (for me).
I've learned to believe in my work and writing.
Finding a working title brought the project to life and answered important questions about scope and story.
A transforming, learning month.

Some interesting ideas, decisions after the first few #AcWriMoments .

Settling on a working title. This had been a worrying omission, a symptom of dithering on scope.

Stepping back to see why the subject still excites me and then building a unique story to spark curiosity in others.

As #AcWriMoments begins, I’m thinking about realistic goals.

A big issue is that my full time work doesn’t relate to my writing project.

So a lot of this month will be about focus. Fixing the writing into daily thoughts, reflections and routine.

Introduce yourself with three books you love.
Well, today it'd be these:
1. The Wind-up Bird Chronicle - Haruki Murakami
2. Lunapark (Babylon Berlin series) - Volker Kutscher
3. Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy - John Le Carre

But tomorrow it'd probably be something different... so many books to love! 💙📚

Hello BookSky 💙📚
I'm new to this community and an avid reader (English, German) for research and above all for joy.
One of my loves is modern Japanese literature.
So here are some reflections on Yoko Ogawa's Memory Police. I wrote this post just after lockdown.

One of the more high-stakes aspects of researching Germany's Left Party (Die Linke) is wondering what will happen first: completion of the book or complete implosion of the party.

Definitely adds a sense of urgency and motivation to get on with the work. 🙄 😬

Thoughts on DieLinke and new Wagenknecht party.
I think Die Linke can rebuild but slowly and maybe not everywhere. Interesting to see if it'll be able to speak with a clearer voice of compassion re immigration and refugees, without being contradicted by its own star/MP on every talk show.

Early results from the regional elections in two German states (Bavaria, Hesse) show that the AfD isn't only an 'eastern' problem. In both states the extreme right is the second largest party. This is bad, bad, news.
