A first post, and a chance of a fresh start on a still largely untainted social networking service. Pleasure to be here.

Unless you're also in the middle of the rather busy Venn Diagram of interests suggested by my profile, you won't like all of my posts, but you likely won't hate them all either.

31/10/1517, later on. Henning Luther, halfwit brother of Martin and prone to misinterpreting things, nailed his 95 faeces to the door of All Saints Church, thus inadvertently inventing scatological humour.

31/10/1517. Martin Luther, professor of theology at the University of Wittenberg, nailed his 95 theses to the door of All Saints Church, thus starting the Protestant Reformation.

He published via the green OA route, with no publisher embargo applied. Metadata wasn't REF or RIOXX compliant, mind.

Last week, I was one of a small number of Sheffield librarians to deliver a morning of online info sharing presentations with our friends at National Technical University of Ukraine. Since which, staff there tell us their immediate vicinity's been subject to constant, heavy shelling. Heartbreaking.
🇺🇦Since the start of the full-scale invasion, 4,063 Ukrainian educational institutions have been damaged, 387 completely destroyed.

I didn't get to Cheltenham last Friday, but the running of the memorial race for the late Jonathan Neesom evoked some memories of him, both direct and indirect. I share them here, along with praise for a couple of the evening's winners.

I know of three snooker equipment shops in Sheffield that Ronnie had a choice of visiting last night.

I understand two of them now have a poster in the window saying it wasn't them.

I don't know how many commentaries John Hunt will have delivered in his career.

None will have required the bravery of today's impact statement in court to deliver.

None will have mattered as much.

Articulate. Angry. Beautiful. Dignified. Powerful. Unbowed.

I understand that it's THIRTY FIVE YEARS to the very day since this defining statement in turn-of-the-80s-to-90s jangly pop was released. Goodness. As taken from the EP The Autumn Store, which came out many weeks after autumn had finished.

The wisdom of eschewing a weight-carrying assignment over Xmas with Ahoy Senor, one which could have informed his prospects doing similar in the National, seems all the more misplaced after today's struggles around a too-sharp 2m6f. Please God these reverses don't sour him.

Kitty's Light had already dropped to within 3lb of his Eider-winning mark before today, and we all know what happened after that. Always the risk these 33 chase starts over five seasons might catch him up eventually, though. The next three months will tell us everything.

Not sure which artificial surface they use at Turfway Park, nor whether the demonstrably freezing conditions have a bearing, but they're walking over the line tonight there as if having completed three miles, not a maximum of one. It could make one nostalgic for the days of Fibresand yet.
