For funsies I wrote up a little test in Pico-8 to compare the two versions myself. It looks like you need to really lose frames to see a substantial difference with the wrong method, but seeing how much better it can be when you do it right is cool

Reminder: if you have to hanko something with your boss, his hanko will be vertically aligned, but your hanko has to be rotated pi/4 anticlockwise to make it look like your seal is bowing to his!!!! How amazing is that?!

That was me, I used this a while ago in a compression format where I just wanted to reduce variation in the exponent bits so they’d delta encode better. Didn’t care about what it rounded to, I just had to know how many bits of precision I was losing. I probably got that trick from cbloom’s blog…
