Fairness matters. Faculty should be, and be seen to be, fair in their decision-making. For example:

1. Keep an open mind when making decisions.
2. Make sure grads can actively participate in decision-making processes.
3. Give reasons for your decisions.

Why and how faculty members should demonstrate they are fair (opinion)
A sense of unfairness can result in students even leaving grad school altogether, write Heather McGhee Peggs, Julie Boncompain and Brent Epperson.

PhD students: How much time does your supervisor spend with you?

A Nature survey found ~half spend <1 hour/week with theirs.

Yet, more supervisor time is linked to much higher satisfaction (82% vs 69%). Supportive mentorship is crucial.

What makes PhD students happy? Good supervision
Supervisors who invest in positive mentoring relationships with their PhD candidates also reap the benefits for their own research.

How do you make the most of supervision?
I prepare in advance & keep a running record of questions/topics I want to discuss & then review it before my session. This helps me to make the most of my supervision.
I'm curious as to what you do?

Your committee is presumably a group of experts, who are committed to your success. Show them what is not working and get their help.

Tell them where you want to be in 6 months and get their advice on how to get there.🧵 /end

What do YOU want - Shorter? Live/hybrid? as a cags.ca/ pre-conference or?

Interesting cags.ca #gradschool National Community of Practice on Graduate Supervision session. So much interest in conflict resolution… too bad there’s not a book or a course about this LOL! 😂 www.supervisingconflict.com
