Fairness matters. Faculty should be, and be seen to be, fair in their decision-making. For example:

1. Keep an open mind when making decisions.
2. Make sure grads can actively participate in decision-making processes.
3. Give reasons for your decisions.

PhD students: How much time does your supervisor spend with you?

A Nature survey found ~half spend <1 hour/week with theirs.

Yet, more supervisor time is linked to much higher satisfaction (82% vs 69%). Supportive mentorship is crucial.

Friday food for thought: what is a good-enough professor?

Something I've been pondering lately: What is a good-enough professor? I work as both a professor AND in faculty development. This week, it struck me that even when we are working with an objectively great professor, someone who has a clear pedagogical strategy and who demonstrates care for their students, we still often present them with suggestions for improvement. What are the pros and cons of this model of continuous improvement? I don't know. But I do know this. I think we need to take a good, hard look at it in the current era of permacrisis. What does it do to morale when we tell a great professor that they still aren't good enough? What does it do to morale when someone who is taking good care of themselves and their students in the midst of ALL OF THIS that they should keep doing more? What if we started saying, "You're doing a great job, and that's enough. I'm here to support you. Keep doing what you're doing"? Listen, I'm someone who's always seeking to grow personally and professionally, so I get it, but I'm starting to question that value of mine/ours. Perhaps good enough is good enough. Would love to know what others think and feel about this!
