I'm trying to think why my NMS record keeping is such a pleasant little mini-game.
"Look how much I accomplished already!"
"I'm looking forward to these unexplored ones"
No time pressure, no judgement
It's do-able. Not too much complexity

Can I apply these skills to real life? ex my garage

Whee!

OK the spell is broken, we're back to the cheese. But OMG I laughed and laughed. I have a pet beetle! Ten year old me would have loved this IRL 💚

Just me and my beetles.

I have a whole island to myself.

No Man's Sky is procedurally generated; there's so much randomness in what you find, and a lot of what you find is plastic looking or clichéd. But sometimes you are blessed by RNGsus and find a world like this!

I landed here and then swam to the next one

Then the sun rose over a blue-green ocean. I had to fly for about 10 min before I found an island I could land on

I'm getting better at using the base-building commands, but this time it showed me something that looked like a scene from Interstellar 😮

"Destination reached" 😂

And when I saw this double sunset...

...and this was a reminder that I will NEVER play Elden Ring 😱

This scene was a reminder that I would like to play Portal again...

...which reminded me of Stephen J Gould's book about the fossils of the Burgess Shale, and the Precambrian explosion of animal diversity.

has a vibrant, diverse undersea life...

One of the ways No Man's Sky is a great mental break is it has been reminding me of things I haven't thought about for a long time. For example this desolate planet...

Even if some of the species are a little immersion-breaking 😂

Soon I will come back to my normal life of cleaning the aviary, planning the garden, doing my random note piano compositions, and carefully looking out at the world deciding what actions I can take.
But in the meantime...it's wonderful to travel, take photos, and observe new species

Another immersion-breaker in this new version of NMS is the amount of drama. I used to love walking on silent, empty, airless worlds but in this week's exploration I haven't found a single one yet. Now everything has dramatic rings! Terrifying lightning storms! Bubbling gases!

One of the things I had forgotten about No Man's Sky is how inconsistent it is. One of my favorite features is the photography setting, and over the years the photos I collected were of the most beautiful scenes. I had forgotten that there were so many goofy ones!

After coming back to No Man's Sky after a 5 year break, I have so many thoughts. I have ideas for my own future video game, and I have ideas for a new video series. It's great to feel inspired in this calm way (rather than white-hot inspiration that keeps me awake til 4 am!!)
