The Harlem Hellfighters were a legendary all-Black WWI unit that spent a record 191 days in combat under French command, earning the Croix de Guerre and introducing jazz to Europe before finally receiving the Congressional Gold Medal in 2021.

Established in 1866, the Buffalo Soldiers were the 1st all-Black peacetime regiments in the U.S. Army. Likely named by Native Americans for their tenacity and hair texture, these units were instrumental in westward expansion & served as the nation’s first National Park rangers.

Frederick Douglass (1818–1895) a premier 19th-century abolitionist + statesman. Denied his birth records, he chose 2/14 as his birthday due to a memory of his mother calling him her "Little Valentine" and a heart-shaped cake. His influential act helped inspire the creation of Black History Month.

Cathay Williams (1844 – 1893) was an American soldier. An African-American woman, she enlisted in the United States Army under the pseudonym William Cathay. Williams was the first female to enlist and the only documented woman to serve in the U.S. Army while posing as a man during the Indian Wars.
