Beneath the unclouded and mild azure sky, upon the fair face of the pleasant sea, wafted by the joyous breezes, that great mass of death floats on and on, till lost in infinite perspectives.

Every novel is a game the reader and the writer agree to play together, but some novels require more agreement than others. INVISIBLE CITIES really asks you to buy in. How to describe it?

I could tell you, I suppose, that it's a dreamy travelogue of invented cities—

There is a great wealth of detail in Aristide Malliol's 'Portrait de Mademoiselle Jeanne Faraill,' (1888) Like his contemporaries, he was influenced by the aesthetics of Japanese art, particularly woodblock prints.

Communities need used-book shops.

As the trends in our world are increasingly standardized and entrenched by "predictive" technologies that stifle innovation and reduce human actions into economic categories...

We need a full range of possibilities for readers and communities to explore and share.

Ellen Thesleff's self portrait of 1895, goes beyond a depiction of outward appearances and conveys the enigma of the artist who helped introduce Impressionism to Finland; she regarded herself as a poet with a brush, always trying to capture what she called 'the dream of life.'

'Timber Yard, Leeds.' (c1915) Urban subjects were Charles Ginner's special contribution to the language of the Camden Town Group of painters - it represented a determined effort by painters to explore new ways of representing the everyday realities of life in Edwardian Britain.

'In Bed.' (1878) Frederico Zandomeneghi’s paintings concentrate almost exclusively on the theme of women: as mothers, friends or solitary figures engaged in personal and private rituals; subjects also treated by his contemporaries including Renoir, Degas and Berthe Morisot.

John Singer Sargent's 'An Artist in His Studio,' (1906) depicts Ambrogio Raffele; he's shown here in his cramped bedroom at Purtud in the Val d'Aosta, Italy. Sargent’s rendering of light on the rumpled sheets of the unmade bed fills nearly half the canvas.

I worked at Planned Parenthood.

They diagnose cancers while still treatable. They help women decide what birth control works for them. They help those working through mental health challenges.

Defunding them just harms people who already struggle to find places to get care.
