This is Zelensky putting pressure on Trump. He knows Ukrainians don't want to surrender. He's talking to all Americans across the political spectrum who support Ukraine, love freedom, and hate surrender. He's telling them: "you can't allow Trump to align the US with Ru against Europe". Let's see.
NEW: Brutal to watch Zelensky address his nation just now. On the brink of being abandoned by the US.

"Right now is one of the most difficult moments in our history. At this moment, Ukraine may face a very hard choice: either the loss of dignity, or the risk of losing a key partner."

Watched this two nights ago & agree, nothing new under the sun. But why beat about the bush? It's poignant because another big democracy, the US, is collapsing into fascism before our eyes & we pretend not to notice or call a spade a spade. Like the frog in the pan of heating water. & a cute penguin
“The Penguin Lessons” is a really good movie for showing a simplistic and clear example of what’s old is new again in the world of fascism.

And there’s a very cute penguin.

A student told her professor “President Trump’s laws state that there are two genders,” and that the lesson was “illegal” for contradicting that. It’s not. Executive orders are not laws.

Compliance with authoritarianism will not protect universities. Either we stand up for our missions or we fall.
Texas A&M’s President just removed a dean and department head from their positions after they supported a professor whose lesson on gender was challenged by a student. www.kbtx.com/2025/09/09/a...
A&M Dean removed following student complaints over curriculum
The Department of Justice has also acknowledged the situation and said it would be investigating.

In May 2022, an Israeli sniper shot and killed Al Jazeera reporter Shireen Abu Akleh. Last week, Israel targeted and killed five journalists in one attack. In between those dates, Israel became the largest killer of journalists in the world.

The way I see it: if Trump is going to eliminate science in the United States, we have absolutely nothing to gain through obedience. If he wants to step on us, he should be stepping on our quills.

Good things are happening, too. 24 BSc students took to the Connacht hills last week, following #Quaternary greats Francis Synge & Hal Borns & learning glacial-geomorphic mapping, beryllium-10 sampling, drone survey, & stone skimming. No chatgpt screwing this up! #geography @uniofgalway.bsky.social

Wrapped up teaching last week w/ a visit to Galway's unique coastal geomorph. Ice-moulded granite overlain by drowned pine forest (doi.org/10.1177/0959...), overlain by drowned peat bog, capped with modern storm beach. ~20kyr compressed into one tiny strip of coast!
