Just a well-read guy who finds all the humblebragging on this platform silly. This may be better than that other platform, but it's miles from real life...

Not voting in the Oscars this year. IMHO they should cancel them. No glitz with Los Angeles on fire.

Here's a history of LA Wildfires. There's been a long history of this that has nothing to do with Trump, Newsom, Bass, budgets, etc.

What is happening now is horrific and heartbreaking, but it is our hubris regarding nature that is ultimately at fault.

I'm old enough to remember when MASSIVE WINTER WEATHER CATASTROPHE TODAY THAT WILL KILL US ALL was just a snowstorm and kids still had to trudge to school and the adults would just add 15 extra minutes to wherever they planned to go.

Until we acknowledge ppl manipulate Islam to engender hate & violence in a way similar to the Crusades, we won't be able to help the 2B adherents-especially women-live a truly free life, nor be able to protect future victims of Islamic terror perpetrated by a corrupt minority of influential Muslims.

Jimmy Carter was so ineffectual at his job he gave us a movie actor as President which led us directly to this moment.

I remember the rolling tide of Blake Lively hate that took over my socials when her movie came out, and was a little confused by it at the time.

Joke’s on me for not realizing an angry man was behind it all. Naturally.

A Complete Unknown was excellent. Critics who complain "you don't get to know Dylan" apparently don't understand Dylan & missed the title of the film, where the premise is stated clearly. Also, Give all the actors Oscars, too--including Chalamet who did what DeNiro did in Godfather II just as well.

[shakes head]

@profgoldberg.bsky.social blames it all on government policy, and not on a poor education system that develops no critical thinking skills, the loss of economic opportunities for the middle and lower class, and a moral center that's more interested in bluesky than arts and culture.
Me, a public health person, just sitting over here reflecting on the fact that the US has experienced a 7% increase in infant mortality post-Dobbs.

Like, do you realize what that says about this society from an ethical perspective? That we made policy choices that caused this?

Infant Mortality Increases Across US Following Dobbs Decision

40 years later this song is still tragically relevant. What a pathetic country this has become.

An example of how insidious antisemitism is: Woody Allen was run out of his job b/c of a story that half his family denies & of which there's no proof or precedent, while Alice Munro, a truly horrible person, was defended for 20yrs while her child begged for acknowledgement of her trauma.
What Alice Munro Knew
The Nobel-winning author’s husband was a pedophile who targeted her daughter and other children. Why did she stay silent?

Let's be clear about Brian Thompson. Two things can be true at the same time:

1) No one deserves to be murdered and it is a tragedy for those who loved him.

2) If you're making millions of $$$ as a healthcare CEO while 27M ppl including 4M kids don't have healthcare, you're not a good guy.

I've enjoyed Disclaimer, Chestnut Man, and Diplomat Season 2 quite a bit the last few weeks. I call these kind of shows "Whole Foods potato chips." They're a light snack, but made with quality ingredients. (For comparison, a show like Watchmen is a five-course gourmet meal.)

This app sucks.

I've spent a week marking all political posts as "see less of this" and I've got the orange fuck non-stop in my feed.

Get a life, people. Do the work in your community and celebrate those they look to denigrate. Stop giving these people platforms.

Eight hours on @bsky.app and I'm already sick of it.

I keep trying to silence political content--including all the blowhard pundits and grifters who misled progressives on the other thing--and get rid of the endless cutesy photos.

How do I get just nourishing intellectual and cultural content?
November 15, 2024 at 7:42 PM
Is there a way to turn down the incredible number of amateur photos in my feed? I don't want to have to scroll through 20 pictures of sunrise/sunset over water or animals being cute to get to something interesting.

My favorite poem: For Grace, After a Party, by Frank O'Hara, paired in this exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery with a painting by the inspiration, painter Grace Hartigan (not shown). #poetry
