It's Squib SZN! 20 films. 5 decades. So many squibs.
With criticism, comedy, and silly-stupid hot takes, GPU pairs movies to get a better understanding of directors, actors, and trends across cinema history.

For our Halloween special, we waxed rhapsodic for @mrkoral.bsky.social 's favorite bit of horror comedy schlock. If you don't know it, check it out!

Neal Jordan's Mona Lisa yielded a fascinating conversation about expectations and inversion in film noir. But @mrkoral.bsky.social is getting into musique concrète so the highlights reel is a little scattered. #filmsky #filmnoir #bobhoskins #musiqueconcrete

For #squib szn, we watched #McQ 's directorial debut. Is it a pomo masterwork, or the final nail in post-Tarantino indie sleeze? Either way, it starts with 10 minutes of gay panic jokes, reenacted here in a Lebowski-style 'edited for tv' format. www.buzzsprout.com/1055659/epis...

Miller's Crossing! Is it good? Most would say so, but one of us says 'no'! Can he survive the ensuing melee? Can you even bring weapons to a podcast?!?! Tune in gentle listener... #squib szn. #coenbrothers #millerscrossing #filmsky

This week on The Good, The Pod, and The Ugly, we take our SQUIB SZN meta, with 1986's corny blast F/X. A big home video hit, it turned Aussie Bryan Brown into a sex symbol for a minute, as he uses tricks of the F/X trade to get back at the FBI.
But how are the squibs???

This week! Alan Clarke's Elephant--inspiration for Van Sant's very different story with the same name. An incisive political commentary on The Troubles?? Or a stylish, nihilistic commentary on violence in cinema? #alanclarke #ira #gusvansant #squibs

Our Aronofsky season launched a thousand hot takes. Can Darren still bring the heat with Caught Stealing? Special guest Gene Siskel joins to break it all down with us.

This week, TGTPTU again interrupts its Season 15’s Squib Game coverage for something unique, a return to Year 1998 through film and to Scarf Season 11 with the new wide release from Darren Aronofsky C...

Graham Greene got only a few lead roles, including the eco-horror Clearcut. It's not great! But he's always amazing. With bigger roles, he could be up there with Pacino and De Niro. What Graham did give us was a cavalcade of unique, human, and dignified characters. A tremendous loss.
SQUIB GAMES #11: CLEARCUT - The Good, The Pod and The Ugly
This week’s moving picture was selected by guest host (and Season 15’s Squib Games curator/raison d'être) Jack, canonically a Ted Kaczynski stan, as confirmed by his pick CLEARCUT (1991).   ...

#hottakeliberationday 15:17 to Paris is a neorealist masterpiece, and a refutation of American Sniper's garish lies and exaggerations. Ironically, but probably deservedly, 15:17 is much-maligned in Sniper's wake. That doesn't mean it ain't interesting af

On the pod this week, we discussed White Hunter, Black Heart - Eastwood takes aim at auteurist theory in a backhanded love letter to John Huston. And to show he's not a total cheese, he plays the part himself. Which some of Da Bois had *feelings* about

#hottakeliberationday Zazlov could solve the debt crisis by simply reissuing the films of America's greatest living auteur in a fancy box set.

3 of 4 Good Pod Uglies think Honkytonk is a secret masterpiece. 1 Ugly thinks the rest are insane. Roles are reversed on this exciting episode of the podcast, as I (Ryan) am somehow not the crazy one 🙃 @mrkoral.bsky.social

ICYMI - @andifarrah.bsky.social stopped by the pod to share some thoughts. I was silenced by the lamestream media ( @mrkoral.bsky.social ) at the time of the recording. I will let the Bruce speak for me.

Thx caller! After watching in full, I stand by all of my prejudices. But I do, now, have a better understanding of the film’s knotty representation of ‘fat people’. Still triggering for me! But I can see why others find it valuable. 🖤-Ryan

Kicking off our REDUX season, the crew look at HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER one more time. Eastwood's 2nd film is his first spooky western, and sees him flirting with Leone, and surrealism.
February 17, 2025 at 3:06 AM
Ken and Jack started GPU as a pandemic project to watch ALL THE EASTWOODS. There's been Streeps and Cages since, Spielberg, Nolan, and more.

This season, we go back for a 2nd look at some selects.

High Plains Drifter's up first - are problematic vengeance ghosts roaming the Old West still cool??

#lvt our final Lars Von Trier, The Boss of it All, is a true trifle - a short 90 minutes, with no spousal mutilation, even! But inside its zany layers lies a nuanced and ultimately disturbing portrait of the evils of late capitalism.

A decade after Element of Crime, LVT has pivoted hard into ugly 00s digital video, mistreating his stars, amateur singing, and a socialist critique of an America he's never seen. Is it Good? Is it Bad? Is it Ugly? Can the bois still be funny watching such sad sack cinema? #lvt #moviepodcast
