Nothing to see here, just the Oklahoma DOC flying drones over prisons. "We’ve mapped the entire facility; it knows what and who should and should not be on our yard.”

(Granted, one of my favorite abolition wins was a plane dropping condoms in a yard in the 90s.)
ODOC will be working alongside Skydio and Levatas, who will supply unmanned drones and AI, which will be used to alert staff of any potential safety, security and maintenance problems. “The autonomous drone platform provides for continuous eyes around the facility. It will give data to those who can take action quickly and provide a deterrent for future cases,” said Levatas VP of Success Adrienne Zarn.

At my pain socialist's today, I saw an MRI of my back for the first time since surgery 5yrs ago. When it loaded, she stopped talking and looked shocked.

It is so validating to something clearly structurally wrong with my back. She offered a surgery referral, which is the only thing that can fix it.
A black and white MRI of my spine from the side. The vertebrae are dark grey vertical in the middle and next to it is the white line where grey nerve pass through the spinal column to the lower half of the body. The top two vertebrae are normal. The L3-L4 is black and almost flat. It sticks so far to my back it cuts off the white line and the nerves underneath is are whispy and look different than they do above that spot. The bones have white compression marks on either side of the disk.The next two vertebrae are also clearly very herniated.

Retrospective review of deaths in the Massachusetts department of corrections after passage of medical parole Highlighted: nearly half of the population died in custody from a chronic condition or complications related to a chronic condition and could have been identified for medical parole eligibility. The majority of individuals died from acute causes, suggesting the need for an expedited review process and expanded eligibility criteria. Abstract Background There are roughly 6,000 individuals incarcerated in the Massachusetts Department of Corrections (MADOC), and in 2025, 32% of these individuals were age 50 and older. Older incarcerated individuals have a higher burden of chronic disease, and caring for them is associated with higher healthcare costs. In 2018, Massachusetts passed legislation enabling medical parole, a process by which an individual can be released due to terminal illness or permanent incapacitation. Existing literature suggests medical parole is underutilized. The aim of this study was to characterize the cause of death of individuals in MADOC custody to determine potential medical parole eligibility and gaps in referrals. Cut for length: Methods and Results. Conclusions In our study, nearly half of the population died in custody from a chronic condition or complications related to a chronic condition and could have been identified for medical parole eligibility. The majority of individuals died from acute causes, suggesting the need for an expedited review process and expanded eligibility criteria. A small number of correctional facilities and hospitals saw the majority of deaths, and these locations may be ideal targets for future interventions. Further work is needed to compare death data before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, assess barriers to utilization of medical parole, and explore other interventions to decrease the number of deaths in MADOC custody. People currently incarcerated on a felony had their voting rights revoked in 2000 after successful political organizing behind bars threatened the legislature.

Looking at the damage to your soul that is zionism is deeply painful, and that is why many people (of every and no faith) will never ever allow themselves to do so.
I no longer think of myself as praying in the direction of Jerusalem. I pray facing Gaza. I try to imagine explaining to the father of Tala, the girl killed in her roller skates, why I continue to pray in so many rooms that are flying the Israeli flag, the state that killed Tala for roller skating outside. I try to think of the excuses, sentimental ideas I was raised with about it being a symbol of pride and refuge for my people. I imagine trying to explain that the flag has to stay there on account of certain important donors to the synagogue. I try to explain why our religious and spiritual leader, the rabbi, can’t take the political risk of taking the flag down. I could not make any of these excuses to the parent of a child killed in Gaza. Long before I said any of these things, I would be devoured by shame. In matters of uncertainty, we set aside all other considerations to save even one life. We cherish and honor children. If Tala’s father would not accept my explanations, why do I think God would? My distress has given way to a deep sadness. I don’t think the people I grew up with singing songs in Hebrew meant the same things I meant when we sang them together. Standing and swaying together all those years, filling our children’s bellies with latkes and challah and hamantaschen, without cultivating our hearts and theirs to see what God sees … it was a terrible mistake. We will spend the rest of our lives reckoning with how we went so wrong. From now on, I insist that we talk to each other out loud in English about what we really think about God,

Fortunately I managed to find something to eat, though it cost a lot. Today's some flour was delivered to a bakery in my camp. You can see how desperate people were. They were fighting for bread. For 13 years, I have worked with organizations that have given me the privilege to read thousands of letters from hundreds of incarcerated people from across Massachusetts and the entire US. What they have told me is consistent with what incarcerated people wisely told you today. I ask that you really weight the words of those incarcerated people brave enough to be here virtually today and listen when they tell you that the problem with prisons is not the physical building. The problem is the torture baked into the institution of incarceration. We cannot fix the evils of prisons with more barbed wire. So I’m going to ask you to consider a child you know. A baby, maybe a daughter or granddaughter or niece not even born yet. What do you wish her life looks like? Where will she go to school? What will she choose to do with her life, and what do you hope you can give her? In five years of talking to people about pausing prison construction, no one has told me that what they want for their baby girl is a prison. And that makes me ask: how can we consign other babies to something we would not accept for our own? How can we wish prisons on babies that are not born yet, babies that are generations away? MCI Framingham is 150 years old. That is 6 generations of babies. And when you have a prison, you fill it. A new prison could doom Massachusetts to reaching for incarceration through 2175. We need the moratorium’s five years to pause and reflect on what we actually want to use our tax dollars to build. Because what we are building now are torture factories. People from all over Massachusetts have told me what your constituents tell you. What they want for themselves and their children is zero-barrier housing, medical and mental health care, substance use treatment, an education, daycare, functioning public transportation, jobs, and dignity. They want a nearby grocery store, a well-funded hospital, and parks. They’re not asking for much. And what people in Massachusetts are decidedly not asking for a new women’s prison, not a new locked facility for children in Taunton, not a new Suffolk County regional lock up, not a new Duke’s County House of Corrections, and not a new Shirley prison hospital wing for chronically sick elders that is a essentially a hospice. A prison hospice. This is impermissible cruelty. Mother’s Day just passed. 60% of women in jail are primary caretakers, and 80% are mothers. So I ask you again to consider. What do you want for your mother? For your sister? Yourself? What do you wish your grandmother’s final years looked like? Did you wish her disintegrating bones and a mattress 20 years old and 3 inches thick? Did you wish that when her colostomy bag spills, she cleans herself of in front of a cellmate and male guard? Did you wish her dementia so she was always terrified and unsure where she was? These things are happening now in Massachusetts prisons. This is what prison is, and it cannot be fixed by a new building with pink paint.* The problems with incarceration are systemic, and the fix for the evils of prison needs to be systemic, too. It needs to be a DOC-wide pause in new beds. When you discuss whether to advance this bill, remember that granddaughter and grandmother. Think of yourself. What do you want for these women? Is it a shiny pink prison? Or is it something new and better? Because we can build something better in Massachusetts. You can be part of it. Don’t just advance the moratorium, fight for it and the Free Her Platform. Thank you. *HDR, the architecture firm that won the women’s prison construction contract, stated in their pitch to DCAMM that pink paint and murals reduce the trauma of prisons for women. They were awarded $50,000,000.

The care incarcerated people offer one another is beautiful and necessary, but this is not the answer. We don't need to invest in training inc people to provide medical care. Critically ill elders like Kelly need to be released.

The nonprofit trains people to provide emotional support and hands-on care for their aging and dying peers. Should the project successfully refine and scale up its efforts, it could reduce the stress caused by prison staffing shortages and improve the overall health of corrections communities across the nation.
