May and June are turtle nesting season in northern Michigan, and it’s always fun to see the variation in color and pattern of box turtle shells. No two are perfectly alike! 🐢

Two weekends ago, it was 60 degrees F, and I discovered this spotted salamander next to a vernal pool. By this past Friday, temperatures had dropped below freezing again, but that didn’t stop these two wood frogs from starting their mating season under the ice. 🐸

Weeks ago, federal civil servants were sent an email asking them to resign. Millions of hardworking people who are serving their country for far less money and job security than they could have had in the private sector are being callously attacked for having the gumption to provide public service.

Looking forward to the imminent arrival of the migratory season again! This photo of a group of ring-necked ducks was taken early spring 2023 🪶

One of the more unique #mammals photos I’ve taken: I was out taking video on my phone of a thunderstorm rolling in over Lake Michigan and captured this lightning strike. When I went back and looked at the video frame by frame, I noticed the silhouette of a bat in the illuminated night sky!

Whether it’s Ron Swanson, who famously hates leaving Indiana, talking about using red birch and western red cedar (Pacific Northwest) for woodworking, or Scranton’s Dwight Schrute talking about how fast he can skin mule deer (western US), I can’t pause my ecologist brain even for my favorite sitcoms
My favourite was having dinner with a bunch of Oxford ornithologists. "Braveheart was RUINED for me about halfway through. Everyone knows black-headed gulls didn't nest inland in Scotland until the 1950s"
Every time I see Marines called "soldiers," my face contorts in rage, and I'm taken right out of the movie/show. Once you know pretty much anything about the military, much of that stuff is unwatchable.

Let's settle this once and for all... should the robin be unseated as Michigan's state bird? 🐦🕊️🦆

Throughout January, vote which bird you think best represents our culture, history and unique ecology.

The winner will be decided in Traverse City on Jan. 29!

All of these eastern box turtles were observed during this past nesting season. It’s really cool to see the variation in color and pattern between shells! 🐢

🐸 Can you spot the tree frog in this picture? A while ago, I was in a skidsteer moving felled trees as part of a restoration project when I noticed this little guy on a tree that I almost picked up. I got out and moved him before continuing. Sometimes having great camouflage isn’t helpful!

Murray’s birch is a rare backcross hybrid (3/4 yellow birch and 1/4 bog birch) known to exist in only two locations in the world. This individual is found at the Ann Arbor, Michigan location, while the other location is in Ontario. #NativePlants #Botany

About a year ago, one of my backyard wildlife cameras captured the best coyote photo I’ve gotten thus far #mammals

Flashback to mid-March: a vernal pool full of breeding wood frogs (sound on to hear their songs) is covered by a rainbow sheen of natural oils produced by bacteria, creating this beautiful scene 🐸

Highlights from the backyard wildlife cam this week include a nice photo of a red fox and what I think might be a goshawk (I’ll have to check with the experts that it’s not a Cooper’s or sharp-shinned hawk)

I imagine I’m moving to bluesky for the same reasons a few million other people did the past couple weeks. On twitter, I mostly just followed college sports content without ever posting. But maybe here I’ll engage more! Pictured is a view of my workplace in northern Michigan, where I’m an ecologist.
