The conclusion, then, must be that they are less interested in protecting their own self-interest than they are in hurting others. Which, ironically, prevents me from empathizing with them; I’ll save my empathy for those who can reciprocate it, many of whom are being fired right now for no cause.

Firing people for reasons unrelated to performance or workload is stupidly inefficient, and you might not want to fire the next crop of wildland firefighters after half of LA just burned down, and public lands are essential to the air, food, water, and inspiration that sustain us as a species.

These people have just started getting used to a new job, a new community, a new place, only to have the rug capriciously and arbitrarily pulled out from under them. In many cases, these people are now homeless, having been living in agency-provided housing.

Hypocrisy aside, this is a shitty way to treat people. They’re now firing all Forest Service employees who have been in their jobs for less than a year, some just a matter of weeks.

This unappointed, unelected loser is going around doing nazi salutes while thousands of people who have sworn an oath to protect and defend our constitution are being fired by him.

It is still utterly galling to see the richest human on Earth whinge about how lazy and overpaid our public servants are while his own billions come from government contracts.

I know that the overwhelming majority of our public servants will reject seven months of severance in exchange for their resignation because they have found a purpose, an intrinsic value, in their work. They work not for profit maximization, but to make America a better place for all of us to live.

Over the course of my career, it has been my privilege to call these people colleagues, coworkers, mentors, and friends, and it disgusts me to see them treated this way. What trump and musk’s sycophants don’t understand is that some people are motivated by things other than money and personal gain.
