just some dude living in Spokane. previously 619, 510, 209, 916, 415, 917. A writer: unpublished novels, goofball polemics in the comments & unjustifiable, unjustifiably long personal emails all specialties
Pete Hegseth is so stupid & evil that if you were writing him as a fictional antagonist you'd have to give all his children inoperable brain tumors just to create the illusion of an excuse for your audience to find anything sympathetic or even human about him

Here's a 1993 Newsweek bit I clipped bc it was pure George Jetson bullshit

Gen X nostalgia is analog, but clearly wizards conjured this digital future; their heirs, the tech bros, haven't invented a goddamn thing in 12 years at least, just love cryptofascism & do crypto scams all day. 👻 (boooo)

The Thing (1982) had a meaningful impact on Thanksgiving itself, as the turducken was invented as a practical effect on set
The Thing (1982) is a Thanksgiving movie.

Thought of it while prepping a Friendsgiving turkey today.

you should believe in ghosts because what if you die and there is such a thing as ghosts? nobody will believe in you if you never believed in yourself
do you believe in ghosts or are you like me, a person who finds themself saying all the time “I absolutely don’t believe in ghosts, but this place has ghosts.”

SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU CANT STEAL MY ENERGY COLIN ROBINSON
KARL: The president claims that Thanksgiving costs are down 25%. Does he know that's not true?

HASSETT: Well if you look at Walmart--

KARL: Wait a minute. I've gotta stop you. The Walmart package this year contains much less than the one last year. That's why the price is less.

middle aged adults would say 'the more things change the more they stay the same' constantly but here in my middle age I haven't heard anybody say that since at least 2016. Doesn't ring true tbh

Keep seeing speculation that the more they cover up The Epstein Files the worse the material therein; this makes them either Schrodinger's Epstein Files or Epstein's Schrodinger Files, depending on whether Schrodinger himself is in them I guess

It's incredible for Hegseth to believe that the most effective military would be the one without any of the discipline that legal rules of engagement demand
Hegseth: "We unleash overwhelming and punishing violence on the enemy. We also don't fight with stupid rules of engagement. We untie the hands of our warfighters to intimidate, demoralize, hunt, and kill the enemies of our country. No more politically correct and overbearing rules of engagement."

comedy seems like an odd fit for Riyadh but organizers probably misunderstood the idiom that you're not considered a real comic unless you've bombed in New York City

THIS ASSHOLE proves that when there's a shitty right wing government fucking up in every conceivable direction, the opposition party cannot make its only goal winning the next election. There has to be an affirmative, explicit progressive vision, or everything will -- implausibly!! -- get even worse
“The belief that uncontrolled legal migration was nothing but good news for an economy should never have been accepted on the Left,” writes Starmer “fighting” populism. What does even mean “uncontrolled” in the case of legal migration? www.telegraph.co.uk/gift/f9444c6...
The Left ignored immigration fears for too long. It’s time to give communities back control
Only a plan for patriotic national renewal led by Labour will counter the rise of the populist Right

man I used to be so smug as a child, reading Solzhenitsyn's The Gulag Archipelago and thinking I was so much better off living in a country that could never have political show trials, anyway godspeed James Comey it's your fault so I blame you but I don't blame The Law, which is only a tool

My dad became a Fox news watcher late in life and it bothers me to see him being whipped into a frenzy at all times; if you're pissed you're gonna keep watching. Anyway Im suspicious of bsky guys that want me pissed off at Trump the same way. Fox viewers are so miserable, I can't live like that

The public myth making around Charlie Kirk makes me wonder how many 1930s German politicians I learned about decades later would have been completely unknown to most German citizens in the 1930s

Eh. As a courtesy he was buried a general but if they're going to dig him up he's a damn colonel
Nuanced take:

1) It's absurd to say Robert E. Lee "wasn't a general" just because we don't recognize the legitimacy of the Confederacy.

2) He was actually very good at being a general (but made a few huge blunders)

3) Insanely dishonorable to have any tributes to him inside the US military
