That was a strong speech of Von der Leyen. Very important announcements regarding Israel/Gaza (she must have felt the heat) but also many other promising initiatives. What was missing: climate change. She handled the shouting of far right MEPs also well, quite embarrassing on their side. #soteu

The far right is shouting now quite a bit during the #Soteu. Apparently, that's what they know best... Interestingly, it's mostly about health and defence that enrages them. But VDL is handling it well and gracefully.

Many nods to the centre left in the European Parliament by VDL by addressing poverty, housing, food and cars. Quite a good balance in her #SOTEU
September 10, 2025 at 8:08 AM
After surprisingly strong language on Israel and Gaza, VDL receiving quite some applause from MEPs, that turn to competitiveness didn't work at all #soteu

Good choice to bring in a personal story at #SOTEU2025, bringing in Sasha, a Ukrainian kid who was forcefully abducted by the Russians. Every child taken away by Russians nerd to be returned pledges Von Der Leyen at #SOTEU in Strasbourg
September 10, 2025 at 7:26 AM
Strong start of #VDL at #Soteu2025. She asks for unity, it's a fight that needs to be taken up, a fight for Europe's future.

The talk in Europe is “how to get a seat at the table.” Respectfully, that’s the wrong question. The right question is, “how can Europe build a new table.”

Here is what to watch out for in the 6pm exit polls:
1) does the CDU cross 30% & how large is the gap to the AfD?
2) is there a majority of seats for a CDU-SPD coalition? This is the easiest (but by no means easy) coalition to negotiate.
3) are FDP and BSW in or out?
4) how well does die Linke do?
