The thing about healthcare policy is that developed countries’ systems *are* falling apart at the seems but the problem is that we’re just getting older. It’s kinda interesting how pensions are a sore spot in the intergenerational wars but healthcare isn’t

People really think how much healthcare you need is all lifestyle factors but it’s actually age! 28 year olds with unhealthy lifestyles barely consume healthcare, 70-something marathon runners need a lot!

This is not wrong.

It indeed was called that.

So, Canadian Social Democrats can be prideful when it is an in-house issue. It is a shame that they're just throwing in the towel here.

NDP voters who know love to point out that the Universal Healthcare program and many other social programs of Pierre Elliot Trudeau were either very similar or outright copies of the CCF (NDP predecessor) government in Saskatchewan.

So, copying the Green New Deal is kind of on brand since the last time there was a New Deal. Although, you'd think almost a century later Canadian Social Democrats would have gained a bit more self-respect with their victories in the late 20th century.

Unfortunately, it was a Too Little, Too Late situation. Mackenzie King won and then he implemented a bunch of social programs that aped the Roosevelt New Deal program.

You would love to hear about how, in the 1935 Canadian Federal Election, out of desperation, the Conservative PM running for Re-election, Richard Bedford Bennet, promised a program that was a full-on copy of the FDR New Deal with the names filed off.

Canadian social democrats should be setting the table for our US counterparts, not the other way around, given the victories of Canadian SocDems post WWII (even if it was by proxy through the Liberal governments).
November 26, 2025 at 6:19 AM
To ignore the US would be impossible (consider when Richard Bedford Bennet promised an FDR-esque New Deal with the names filed off during the 1935 federal election, but Mackenzie King did it anyway after he won), but at the same time the lack of self respect is a shame.

In fairness, Canadian leftism/social democracy has followed the drumbeat of American movements before (one of our first Socialist parties was the Canadian branch of an American movement), but the paradox is that Canadian social democrats certainly made more progress than their counterparts south.

"There is an innocence to them" jeez, dude, Dort is talking about trained soldiers, his own peers, the way folks that invented the Noble Savage archetype talked about indigenous people.

Bro forgot the citizen-soldier is also a citizen and should be capable of thinking for themselves and making rational decisions as citizens of a democratic and free society.

It is nuts because he does not just have an economics degree, Carney's resume should back up that he has the capacity for long term economic planning. Like, does he need a poli-sci adviser to tell him that a Prime Minister does not, and should not, need to govern like this?

I increasingly get asked why then do parties still do it. I don't have a good response but it has imho a lot to do with internal decision making, power struggles and political advisors. I don't think politicians should just "follow the research" but it is striking how many arguments are just wrong.

This is not to say all campaigns are scams. Many are real! But you need to look closely at where you put your money.
