Under the U.S Constitution, the President is very explicitly not a king. The President's wishes and decrees do not magically become law.

Schiff: This is not who we are. We don’t bully an ally. We don’t take the side of a dictator. We’re just not what we saw displayed by the President of the United States today. I would say to our allies around the world that what they witnessed today might be Donald Trump, but it is not America.

Eighty percent of Germans voted against the far right, with Putin and Elon Musk turning out to be less popular than feared.

Can that happen here? @monikab.bsky.social on the biggest takeaways from the German election.

Putin planned to take Kyiv in three days, but he couldn't take Kyiv in three years.
The only way Putin wins now—the only way he finally succeeds in destroying Ukraine’s sovereignty—is by persuading Ukraine’s allies to abandon Ukraine.

I refuse to be ruled by a king.

Authoritarians in countries backsliding away from democracy learned not to cancel elections. Instead, they abuse state power to give themselves unfair advantages in elections, then cite their “victory” as a source of legitimacy.

US is not really at risk of no elections. The risk is unfair ones.
Liberal gallows humor holds that we won't have any more elections. But if Trump believes that Putin is a more legitimate president than Zelensky just because he had more recent "elections," I'd bet that we *will* have elections, just ones that look more and more Russian.

How much is Congress cutting from their $6.5 billion/year budget? Don’t you think congress can operate on say, maybe, $5 Billion? And each congressman has 18 staff, they could operate on say, 14?

What about the White House?

thx in advance

I think we need to be more judicious in who we award PhDs to.
Kevin Hassett on Trump's avian flu plan: "What we need to do is have better ways w/ bio-security & medication & so on to make sure that the perimeter doesn't have to kill the chickens. To have a better, smarter, perimeter...they're killing chickens to stop the spread, but chickens don't really fly"
