One of my best friends is from a sleepy, wealthy small town in the south-west of Germany. He said, so many of my parents’ neighbours are rich and bored, with little to complain about, and they’ve radicalised themselves at dinner parties and online. In their aimlessness, they’ve bonded over hate.

This isn’t some rant saying “Germany has learned nothing from its past” - the reality is more subtle than that. Middle-class Germans live and travel with an incredible amount of ease and comfort, and they just got…sleepy. Many of them dismissed the far-right’s rage as just another set of complaints.

I gotta say, the “Trump is the president and the idea that Elon Musk is calling the shots is a paranoid conspiracy theory” narrative is not especially persuasive when Musk is the one taking calls from heads of state in response to changes in U.S. foreign policy wapo.st/4gwztEH

While it is unclear whether he influenced the president's order, Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX and a close adviser to Trump, was born in South Africa. Over the past years, he has amplified similar claims on X, accusing the South African government of anti-White racism, and in 2023 alleging that some of the country's Black, left-wing politicians were "openly pushing for genocide of white people."
On Monday, Musk doubled down on his claims, asking Ramaphosa on X: "Why do you have openly racist ownership laws?"
After Musk's attack on X, Ramaphosa had a phone call with the tech billionaire about
"issues of misinformation and distortions about South Africa," his office posted online.
