Actually, no, I was wrong about the twist. I expected some kind of body-swap thing because of course I did. Still a good show, and a satisfying but unexpected ending.

Oh, wait a second. I just woke up with the realization of what I think the show’s big twist is. They’ve been hinting at it constantly. If I’m right about where it’s headed, then it’s fitting that I already like the show so much. This might be something really brilliant if they execute it well.

Episode 5… please excuse me while I catch my breath. That is now the ninth-ever entry into my list of excellent single episodes of television, and it made my list before the final scene. I fell onto the floor when that sequence started. If you’ve seen it you know.

A lot of Netflix shows struggle to create tonal contrast. The thrillers, dramas, and horrors often stay rooted in their darkness, blunting the shock of twists, scares, and tragic turns. Refreshingly, Wayward includes scenes that are lighthearted enough to make the audience forget what’s coming.

Do I wish that Martin’s protagonist wasn’t a cop? Yes. Do I think it’s exciting and inspiring to see a trans person play a canonically trans main character in a story that isn’t centered around transness but amplifies and examines its intersections with the main plot, even though humor? Also yes.
