Just what you wanted to see: ANOTHER author flogging her book with Christmas decking in the background. I wouldn’t do it, but honestly, I love this book, and know many Brigit lovers who are very happy to — 1/3

When people ask me if we Irish *really* believed in the wee folk...
Acceptance of the otherworld wasn't a superstition or ignorance: it was just an integral part of life here in Ireland & we retain this to some degree

"On St. Martin's night some people kill a goose or a chicken and keep its blood. It is a cure. It falls on the eleventh of November

ST Martin's is a fascinating day in Irish folklore, a great example of the way folk belief and religion mingled. Blooding the 4 corners of the house gave protection.

ST MARTIN'S in Ireland is a fascinating confluence of magical and religious traditions centred around protection. Good Weather in early November is known as St Martin's Summer- currently 13° C and sunny!

The terms are relatively new, the concept is ancient.
In early Ireland energy of wild places (Brí) and energy of Human places (Bua) are the basis of magical energy. Narural energy, expressed in Draíocht Ceoil as sound - "the note of a place"

"There was a "Lis" in a certain man's land and there were sallies growing in it. One time the man cut sally out of the "Lis" this happened during the month of November and after that every month of November his neck swelled (used swell) and it was during the month of November he died." NSFC Cork

#halloween little treasure from the past. An old very battered remnant of a book my dad kept close, a #dream interpretation manual.
It came from his own dad but almost certainly belonged to either his mother or granny.
And people wonder why I'm the way I am :)

Irish newspaper articles from 1850s on, we get remnants of verse, charms, used at Halloween.
The first two emphasize the traditional belief that the Good Neighbours, or other otherworldly entities, are out and about at #Halloween #folklore #magic #witchesofinstagram #ireland #samhain #folkmagic

Last census, we were asked to write a "time capsule". mine is a poem based on the Irish
'Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine.'
People live in the shadows of each other;
we are all in this together but also, we can choose to make it better or worse for each other.
I choose better.

Two different pieces of lore from Halloween in Ireland, both concerned with love - but one definitely more romantic than the other! Both from Cavan, these stories emphasize the duality of love magic.

I dont care what age you are. Come to me door. I will give you treats and praise your costume/lack of costume as required
This is your annual reminder that if teens come trick or treating this weekend, they could be doing way worse things. Let them have one more year being a child, another year at feeling the magic, let them be care free and have fun, compliment their costume, and give them some damn candy.
