Here is an excellent article on the issues with STOTEN journal, and with scientific publishing in general:

The fall of a prolific science journal exposes the billion-dollar profits of scientific publishing
One of the 15 publications that put out the most studies globally has been expelled from the indexing system for irregularities. Its publisher, Elsevier, has a 38% profit margin that reached $1.5 bill...

Excited to share our @UQ_News & @CSIRO study in Nature Ecology & Evolution 🌊
We show how coral patch density & spacing affect fertilisation success — key for knowing when reefs risk reproductive failure.

Another post-doc opportunity at the University of Queensland to work on coral reefs. This time modelling reef ecosystems in the Red Sea in collaboration with Dave Suggett at Kaust. 2.5 years and work rights in Australia. Happy to discuss.

Many of us are using LLMs in coding and scientific writing. They are very helpful tools, but we need to be thoughtful as we integrate them into our work flows to preserve accountability, voice and trust. academic.oup.com/evlett/advan.... An editorial at @evolletters.bsky.social for discussion:

Our new #simulation #model shows how #interactions among multiple reef factors can sometimes lead to unexpected patterns of coral #settlement and could influence the results obtained from common field sampling methods🧐

🌊 Frontiers in Marine Science downgraded to 'junk' status by Finnish board.

It's always hard to decide what journals to support, I'm generally of the opinion AGU/EGU & other society journals are best for quality peer-review, whereas Frontiers/MDPI are very poor.

Widespread inconsistency in logger deployment methods in coral reef studies may bias perceptions of thermal regimes
Ocean warming is the greatest threat to coral reefs, prompting a need to accurately monitor in situ temperatures. Advancements in sensing technologies have led to a proliferation of temperature logger...

Single-blind #peerreview leads to more positive outcomes if you are:
- male
- White
- in the US or North America
- well-published or known in your field
- affiliated with a prestigious institution

Can we please make double-blind the gold standard now?

Corals need to be close to their partners to reproduce, just a few meters. This has implications for bleaching event recovery which can leave individuals stranded, hampering reef re-population.

Corals depend on near neighbours to reproduce
A new study reveals corals must be within only a few metres of each other to successfully reproduce, leaving them vulnerable in a warming world.

My latest post. Six of the nine planetary boundaries have been crossed and it turns out most of the contribution towards these transgressions is from the wealthiest 10% of consumers. I discuss a recent paper that uncovered these results and some of the potential to turn things around.
The wealthy contribute disproportionately to planetary decline
But they can also have the greatest role in turning things around
