Training. A tank commander had quite a bit more training than an infantry NCO, and a tank crewman also needed a lot more training than an infantry private.

The driver's role was considered the most important in keeping the crew alive, even more important than the gunner.

Ah cool, thanks for the reply. Yeah makes sense re tank drivers, and them being pretty key to vehicle survival. Be a right knack to not busting the engine/braking or throwing a track, timely firing halts and using the ground to advantage.
