The USSR received its first FIAT 3000 tank #OTD in 1927. Some claim that it was copied to make the MS-1, but the MS-1 was accepted into service earlier that year and had very little to do with the Italian tank from a technical standpoint. #tanks #history

Trials of the 76 mm S-54 gun began #OTD in 1943. This gun greatly boosted the firepower of the T-34 tank without the need for a new turret, but was not put into mass production since it required different ammunition than the F-34. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

The USSR was informed of the characteristics of the Light Tank M3 #OTD in 1941. An order was made for these tanks, which began arriving in January of 1942. The Red Army considered these to be the best light tanks of the period short of their own T-50. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

Nazi Germany's second attempt at building a medium tank was a failure. #OTD in 1936 a third project arose, codenamed Begleitwagen (support vehicle) or B.W. for short. This tank became the Pz.Kpfw.IV, a successful model modernized and produced until 1945. #tanks #history

Initially, the turret of the Maus tank was located in the middle. In October of 1942 the tank was redesigned to move the turret to the front, but #OTD in 1942 the turret moved again, this time to the rear of the hull. This was the final layout. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

Jumbo Sherman tanks turned out to be incredibly resistant even to the enemy's most powerful weapons. #OTD in 1944 a Jumbo from the 6th Armored Division took 6 hits from 88 mm guns without a single penetration. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

A study of a new M4A2(76)W tank was completed at the NIBT Proving Grounds in Kubinka #OTD in 1944. The upgraded Sherman tank was much more than just a new gun on an old chassis, as it had a whole new turret and features like wet ammo racks. #tanks #History #WW2 #WWII

#OTD in 1926 the A1E1 Independent tank was shown to the public for the first time. The tank looked impressive to an uninitiated observer, but it was plagued by mechanical troubles. Nearly a decade later, the sole prototype was retired. #tanks #history

I think I stepped on some toes by saying the Valentine was the #BestTankoftheWar rather than the Sherman. Blogspot unpublished my Western Allies page (and only my Western Allies page). I would like all of my followers to know that I stand behind my controversial statement.

#OTD in 1941 the Military Council of the Leningrad Front decided to convert 10 obsolete T-26 tanks into SU-26 SPGs. This vehicle was armed with a short 76 mm gun for use in a close support role. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

#OTD in 1941 the Ordnance Committee recommended accepting a light tank with a pair of Cadillac engines into service under the index Light Tank M4. The tank was actually named M5 to avoid confusion with the Medium Tank M4. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

Assembly of a special design group in Chelyabinsk was proposed #OTD in 1942. The group, led by experienced SPG developer Lev Troyanov, developed the SU-152 and many other heavy SPGs. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

#OTD in 1926 Medium Tanks Mk.I and Mk.II were shown to leaders of Commonwealth nations. These odd looking vehicles ended up being surprisingly successful, serving into the 1940s in some armies. #tanks #history

Trials of the Object 704 concluded #OTD in 1945. The vehicle passed trials, but the army's appetites had expanded greatly since it was first envisioned. Since the army now wanted more powerful guns on the Object 701 chassis, the Object 704 was cancelled #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

#OTD in 1942 a Cromwell tank was demonstrated to a Soviet delegation. The demonstration went so poorly that one representative thought it must have been staged. The Cromwell tank really was laden with problems and would not see battle until June of 1944 #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

#OTD in 1944 trials were carried out against a Tiger tank at the 3rd Belorussian Front. The trials showed that 45 mm guns and AT grenades can stop a Tiger tank by destroying its track and running gear, but anti-tank rifles were useless at this task. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

It's my Blueskyversary! Unfortunately I'm not pulling in Twitter numbers over here but there are also fewer porn bots, so truly it's a land of contrasts.

The last known mention of the Sturer Emil tank destroyer with the personal name Moritz was made #OTD in 1942. The 521st Tank Destroyer Battalion it belonged to was fighting near Stalingrad at the time. Subsequent reports only accounted for Max, its "brother". #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

Development of a high velocity gun 152 mm for the ISU-152 was approved #OTD in 1943. It was designed to combat German superheavy tanks, but since these tanks never showed up it was never mass produced. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

#OTD in 1942 the Red Army switched to winter time rules of vodka distribution. Front line troops got 100 grams, those in reserve got 50. Wine could be substituted in southern regions where it was in abundance. #history #WW2 #vodka #WWII

French 40 mm thick cast armour was not particularly tough. The Germans tested exported French tanks captured in Poland and #OTD in 1939 distributed pamphlets describing their vulnerability to 20 and 37 mm AP shells. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

The Red Army operated a number of foreign tanks, but only one dominated the charts for the majority of the war. See which one it was in my latest video, the answer may surprise you! #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

#OTD in 1941 an order was given to look for alternative guns for the KV-1 in case supplies of 76 mm ZIS-5 guns were disrupted. The result was the KV-9 armed with a 122 mm U-11 howitzer. This was a powerful but ultimately unnecessary upgrade. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

A prototype of the A33 Excelsior, an assault tank based on the Cromwell chassis, was finished #OTD in 1943. Both this and the American T14 assault tank were deemed unsatisfactory and the British stuck with the Churchill. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

Trials of the AC IV tank armed with a 17-pounder gun and a new 510 hp engine began #OTD in 1942. This was an exceptional tank considering that Australia had no tank industry before the war, but it remained a prototype. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII
