Megachilidae something sp. (My Padil is down so any help is appreciated)

Watch this native bee making a home in its little wooden haven. A glimpse of the incredible biodiversity and vital role these pollinators play in our ecosystems. #SaveTheBees

Learned so much about Native Exoneura Bees today with Julian Brown at the @unimelb Burnley Campus as a part of their reed bee relocation program to look into pollination of berries.

Turns out Reed bees are really cool.

Art by Indigo Harrison in the Koorie Heritage Trust

“I love the name murnong as the murn meaning hand and the roots when harvested look like our fingers.
They taste delicious like parsnip as I learnt whilst visiting 'Yumbarra' where I had the opportunity to eat them in a curry.”

Trust none other than Michael-Shawn Fletcher to have the most powerful and awakening talk at #ESAus2024

Key ideas:
-we need to see ourselves (humans) as a part of the environment for science
-bushfire problems are lack of culture not a CC problem
-we need to stop ignoring TO fire knowledge

Australian Extinction Bombshell.

Estimates of 1,400 - 57,000 invertebrate species have gone extinct in Australia since European invasion.

Love this visual from Dave Kendal talking about Nature based Solutions (NdS) and the overlap with Biodiversity, Societal challenges and Green infrastructure concepts. That sweet spot in the middle is nice, but not always feasible/targeted @ecolsocaus.bsky.social #ESAus2024

Favourite concept so far at @ecolsocaus.bsky.social #ESaus2024. @dieterhochuli.bsky.social discussing the need to change our typical perceptions of species (pictured) to not look past the value of common species, particularly when looking at nature in urban environments 👏🏻

Here’s my Do ✅ and Don’t ❌ of making a Bee Hotel

✅Do:
Use drill bits between 3-10mm
Use bamboo/pithy stems.
Face north-east for morning sun
Keep close to flowering plants

🚫 Don’t:
Use plastic or metal
Use treated wood
Buy imported bee hotels

Can be very hard to distinguish with the naked eye too, biggest tip is that the actual wasps will fold the wings in half long ways.

Wasp mimic bees also make the coolest nest entrances you’ll ever see 🤯
