A new sustainability standard has been set for conference lanyards! This #ICCB2025 one is compostable & plantable! Native seeds r embedded into the name tag so local delegates encouraged to plant it for habitat. How good?! As paying delegates, we can and should ask for sustainability like this 😎💃

Assembling an assortment of native #bee hotels (thanks to @flowhive.bsky.social and @georgeclancylester.bsky.social ) in the lead up to #worldbeeday.
Keep an eye out for how you can score one of these next month (and help out Ukranian #beekeepers)!

Did you know that there are over 2000 species of native bees in Australia and around 70% nest in the ground, like the beautiful blue banded bee. Make your own clay block hotel today: champ.ly/EZw1C5H4 📷 @georgeclancylester.bsky.social 🌍ð🐝 #beehotel #nativebeesaustralia #savethebees

Reedy Bee Homes for native Bees 🐝
Need a project for the kids over the school holidays? Reedy bee hotels are made from locally sourced dead, pithy flower stems, hollow reeds and untreated bamboo. They attract cavity-nesting native bees like reed bees, leafcutter bees and masked bees.

How to: Hardwood Bee Hotels.
Need a fun project to do over the weekend? Make your very own hardwood bee hotel, which provides habitat for many cavity-nesting species so they can help pollinate local flora. Learn more: champ.ly/EZw1C5H4 📷 @georgeclancylester.bsky.social 🌍ð🐝 #beehotel #nativebeesaustralia #savethebees

It can be an issue when the bee hotels are larger and it’s better to have a number of smaller ones which is more like mimicking the natural nesting sites and materials

Placement can be important, you want to make sure the ends of the tubes are facing the north/north east in a sunny area?

Steer clear from commercial bee hotels!! Make your own everyone 🫶🏻💯
Did you know that store-bought bee hotels are often toxic to native bees 🐝? They’re usually imported from overseas and fumigated at customs or made from treated or varnished wood. Most are also built with cavities that are too large or shallow to nest in.

There’s plenty of other awesome native plants that are great for pollinators but I based this list also on those which are usually available from native plant nurseries, and tried to include genera from across Australia. 🇦🇺
