Following the resignations of all Chief Editors of the journal Sedimentology, I and about 40% of the Associate Editors have also resigned. This has been a very difficult decision for all of us, however we felt that we could not continue. Some AEs have served the journal for decades.

A sad outcome. Hopefully @sedimentology.bsky.social leadership will reconsider its proposals and our flagship journal can continue to be the go to journal for the sedimentology community and be "by its members for its members."

How much more evidence is needed that the research funding system is broken? Industry funding of R&D would simply not permit such a waste of time and resources.
Researchers spend approximately 45% of their time on administrative activities related to #grants rather than actual #research. The current #competition in research #funding has significant drawbacks; evidence-based improvements of the funding system are required: www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

In 2023, geophysicists were listed as 3 of the top 5 jobs on the UK government's Shortage Occupation List that identified gaps in the UK labour market.

During your University of Derby #EarthSciences BSc you will be trained to use a wide range of industry-standard geophysics software.

⚒️🧪 Very interesting article on metal resources and the energy transition (focusing on neodymium, but more broadly applicable). Amongst other points, argues that focussing on how much of a resource we have to use is not as important as the potential environmental impact of getting what we need.🧵
This rare earth metal shows us the future of our planet’s resources
The story of neodymium reveals many of the challenges we’ll likely face across the supply chain in the coming century and beyond.

Starter packs are rad, but they tend to favor large, well-known accounts.

This is a list of some of my personal go-to experts across a wide variety of climate-related fields - science, economics, policy, risk, beavers?? - who are still building their networks here. Have a look.
