Yeah, the Melissa stuff hits me hard. In part because of how much I like the character, for sure, but also just...it's a lot of worries trans people have to deal with around coming out to loved ones, tackled one after the other after the other

And, also, I think it's probably a weird "I'm not gay" thing. If Jake is attracted to *Dina* then, well, Dina's kinda a non-person in a way Declan isn't, so it's not gay, his masculinity isn't impugned. But Val's off-limits, so no need to see *her* as a woman.

It also kinda works in relation to a common experience trans women go through where they're called a girl by bullies before they come out ("You read books? Don't be such a *girl*!") and then get told they'll never be a girl by the same folks once they do

So in both cases Jake is overruling them. To assert his control over them, for sure, but also just because attacking someone's identity like that is a great way to other them and hurt them and show that their opinion is so meaningless to you that you get to choose their very self

"It's strange that Jake calls Val "Vincent" but Declan 'Dina.'"

I think it's important in both cases that the names he uses reject the identity of the subject. Val is Val, she chose to be Val and has been Val for decades. Declan is playing at being "Dina" under coercion

I'm not *huge* on forcefem, but I read some of it, and the enjoyable stuff is kinda vicarious wish fulfillment *or* doing some interesting stuff about that agency loss and what it means. Sometimes both!

The main thing is the force-feeding, which he kinda fixates on once it's brought up because of how horrific a thing it is and how the text mostly glosses over it. But beyond that he's very much "would I want to be force-femmed? Nope, but it's part of the book and it's an engaging premise".

Nah, he's reading in good faith and is pretty good about saying "I think this part here just isn't for me, but I do find x, y, and z interesting".

I think "getting hung up on the ethics of it" is misleading, honestly.

The *real* reason people should be upset is that the game is called "Divinity", which won't be confusing *at all* :P

But, like, it's not 1000xResist

So, I haven't *finished* it, but it's good at building an atmosphere and goes for a kind of beauty-of-melancholy that's kinda rare in gaming. The VA work and music help a lot, I think, and the combat is solid. I'm not sure I'd evangelize it, but it's fun.
