Talking about Spice bags with @eatthispodcast.com @tudublin.bsky.social a few weeks ago was great fun & thanks for the opportunity to do so! Just a sample of what’s in my book to be published next year by @9beanrowsbooks.bsky.social
In 2008, staff at a Chinese takeaway in Dublin cooked themselves up a special treat after hours. One thing led to another and today you can find something similar not only across Ireland but around the world, as I learned from @gastroirl.bsky.social

I love the loyalty that Darina has for her alumni - it’s admirable.

Thrilled to see part of the professional Masterchef final set in Baltimore, Co Cork, at Ahmet Dede’s 2* Michelin restaurant. Also notable this series has not gone to any other restaurant location outside of Britain

This is a fab example of soft power of gastrodiplomacy seting up food tourism in Ireland. Simple, really, but highly effective. An Irish film festival in India, supported by the local School of Hospitality sets up a culinary experience featuring Irish Apple Cake & Boxty. Kudos to all involved!

Great news: “Irish Food History, A Companion” edited by @irishcookbooks.bsky.social & Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire has just won Food & Drink Book of the Year @ the Irish Book Awards tonight. Full disclosure- I was one of the 25 contributors to the book.

Interesting auction next week for gastronomes - 100 lots from the "Jill Norman Collection of Cookery Books & Manuscripts". Jill was a well known editor & editor of Elizabeth David, whose works feature along with a collection of "Petits Propos Culinaires". All very tempting......

Can you believe it? The Boxty House restaurant in Dublin is 35 years old & now run by the second generation! Huge credit to Padraigh Óg Gallagher & his family, and thank you for the opportunity to celebrate it with you. (Boxty is a trad potato fish from Leitrim and the surrounding counties)

Arrived in a chilly Stockholm today to contribute a Food Tourism policy paper to the Stockholm Gastronomy Conference (186 papers over 25 sessions: who knew?!!). Apparently the gala dinner is at the Vasa Museum where the dress code advice is: ‘elegant but warm’. I can’t wait!

Just back from the Samhain Festival of Food & Culture 2023 in Kells, Co Meath where we talked about this forthcoming book. I think it may be of interest to some? One of the editors is @irishcookbooks.bsky.social and, dare I say, contributors include myself.

Following a fascinating piece by @irishtimes.bsky.social magazine on Oct 21st about menus from special dinners held in late 1900's Ireland, it seems UCD archives has a few too. Any more out there? They are a valuable window into our past. ucdculturalheritagecollections.com/2023/11/02/f...
