Nearly everyone was fired today, as part of the massive layoffs of 1,300 throughout the cabinet agency. The acting commissioner is still there along with a skeletal staff, I am told. This stats agency dates back to 1867, long before the Department of Education was established in 1979. There is apparently no plan yet on where to transfer the congressionally mandated operations of data collection or student assessment. NCES oversees the NAEP test, the nation's report card, which is one of the only ways we can tell how students are doing academically and compare students across states.
