Hey there folks, apparently it's intro time. I'm Gankom, one of the many denizens of the internet. I'm a fan of a great many things, from history to hobby, from the natural world to the weird little internet places. My account exists primarily to boost the odd & wondrous things I come across online.

A VERY popular question right now on AskHistorians is also a pretty frequently asked one. "How does Ken Burns hold up? " Several of our fantastic contributors weigh in on the matter, including links to previous discussions on older documentaries . Don't miss it #Skystorians!
How does Ken Burns hold up?
I’m a high school history teacher and recently had a coworker bring up that Ken Burns doesn’t hold water with historians. Is this true?

As the person who wrote the original takedown of Tartaria some five years ago (www.reddit.com/r/badhistory...), what has always amused me is just how *flexible* the Tartaria conspiracy is, bringing together tendentious readings of Early Modern texts + maps with early 20thC photography.

THE TERMINATOR was released 41 years ago today. Acclaimed as one of the great science fiction/action films of the 1980s, and the film that launched the career of writer-director James Cameron, the story of how it was made absolutely will not stop. Ever. Until it is read…

Halloween was the first horror series that I ever obsessed over (I watched the original in fourth grade and was hooked). So, in the spirit of the season, lets run down one of the most famous and most wildly uneven slasher series ever:

My latest for @nytimes.com! For 40 years, paleontologists have grappled over whether a small tyrannosaur — named Nanotyrannus — was its own animal, or simply a teenage T.rex. The debate has been ... contentious. Which is why it's so fun to finally be able to say this:

Folks? Nanotyrannus is real.

My 8-month-old is currently napping contentedly — a rare feat for the little gremlin, especially in her sleep regression phase. Today I lulled her down using a trick someone on here or X recommended: playing "Misty Mountains" from The Hobbit movies on repeat. Soothed her right down.

I was, surprisingly, entirely sober when I decided to make snagshi.

Get really into dinosaurs. That's my recommendation for a happier life. Each day, I get news like "Look at this big freak that used roam the Earth!" or "Ya know the big freak you already loved? Fossils show it was even more freakish!" and it's a blessing every time.

How much credit does Napoleon actually deserve for his victories?
You're correct to point out that subordinate leaders in the Napoleonic Wars had greater scope to exercise their own judgement than their counterparts in the wars of Frederick the Great. In most of Frederick's battles, he did attempt to work out a set idea to govern the whole concept of the attack. However, it's important to underscore that this stemmed from the fact that once the battle proper began, he would have little control over the forces actively engaged, which comprised most of his army
