@gameovermike.bsky.social
Houston based CRM archaeologist interested in the late 19th/early 20th century. In particular WWI training camps and conflict sites. I also sometimes have thoughts on movies, beer, and politics. You know, human culture and stuff.
Archaeology friends. Does anyone recognize this button design? Texas, 19th or 20th century. 🏺

Nothing more "fun" than an archaeological metal detector survey of a 30-acre area covered in poison ivy, full of pull tabs, and just enough serious archaeology to keep you honest. 🏺

I've surveyed an abandoned orphanage surrounded by corn fields, seen creepy abandoned objects in the woods, and talked to many unnerving landowners. But the scariest thing I've seen doing this job is this freak.

Tell me your spookiest archaeology encounter. 🏺

Sample of the artifact drawings that kids did this year at our table at Archaeology Day.

Come check it out.

This Day in History is really on the nose today.

Prost!

My only vaguely authentic homemade Oktoberfest.

The only thing better than beer, is beer with elephants.

@fieldofschemes.bsky.social @jcbradbury.bsky.social thought you would enjoy this bit of "journalism" from the September 19, 1930 edition of the Houston Chronicle. They wanted city park land, it failed because the original sale specified the lands return if used for anything other than as a park.

Cannon Beach and Astoria are both great. Excellent hiking and food options. Also really great if you grew up loving The Goonies.

John spent the rest of his life working as a barber in Galveston. Sometimes at exclusive hotels like the Tremont, other times operating a shop out of his home. Always living with or near his mother, Anne.

He was heavily involved in Reconstruction era politics, serving as the Ward Chairman for Colored Republicans in Galveston County and helped organized a union for journeymen barbers.

Years ago I was on a project recording an African American beneficial society cemetery. The markers had been buried, including that of John Q.A. Potts. Born in Louisiana in the late 1840s/early 1850s, he was in Galveston, Texas by 1862. Which means he was likely present at the original Juneteenth.

When a beer nerd graduates.

I hope the cylons or the goua'old don't interrupt graduation.

This is a niche nerd tweet.

It's upper 70's / low 80's with low humidity in Houston. In May.

All the patio beers.

If I was the star of a late 90's comedy about an idiot accidentally launched into space.

Happy May the Fourth. We're at NASA looking at big ass rockets.

Defended my thesis today. I deserve this fried food and beer.

At 4 inches this is probably the biggest snow I've seen in 20 something years of living in southeast Texas (BCS and now Houston).

My Xmas gift from @sewnandsea.bsky.social this year was a beer box subscription from City Brew Tours. Starting out in New Jersey.

Had this previously during the Pandemic and it's a great way to try beers from around the country.

The weather app is having trouble properly displaying the temperature swing we're about to get in Houston.

A quasi tradition of ours is that at the end of the holidays, as we head back to Houston from Dallas, we stop at the excellent Manhattan Project Brewing Co.

Excellent food, great beer. Also coffee if you need it for the drive.

My 2024 year in beer. Definite highlight was way back in January and visiting Dokkabier in Oakland.
