Houston based CRM archaeologist interested in the late 19th/early 20th century. In particular WWI training camps and conflict sites. I also sometimes have thoughts on movies, beer, and politics. You know, human culture and stuff.

pre-writing a devastating obituary for your enemy is god-tier hating of a kind you don’t often see anymore. renaissance haterism. beautiful stuff.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

Here's the Dutch coverage of Trump & the Heritage Foundation removing signage honoring African American soldiers at overseas cemeteries.

The thread provides a pretty good summary. I can't find any English language news coverage.

Nothing more "fun" than an archaeological metal detector survey of a 30-acre area covered in poison ivy, full of pull tabs, and just enough serious archaeology to keep you honest. 🏺

I know this is pedantic, but Kim Davis was not "jailed for refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses." She was jailed for contempt of court because she refused to follow a court order (she had stopped issuing all marriage licenses). NYT makes it sound like the Woke Police broke down her door.

I've surveyed an abandoned orphanage surrounded by corn fields, seen creepy abandoned objects in the woods, and talked to many unnerving landowners. But the scariest thing I've seen doing this job is this freak.

Tell me your spookiest archaeology encounter. 🏺

In a new court filing, a TX county says 25% of the alleged noncitizens flagged by the state actually registered to vote at DPS, meaning they provided proof of citizenship when they registered. But I'm guessing Greg Abbott won't tell you that part.

Today, the descendants of the people enslaved by these Massachusetts families are in tremendous need. This is the exact area hit hardest by Hurricane Melissa. Part of the reason the people are so vulnerable is that their ancestors were enslaved, exploited, and impoverished to make Cambridge rich.

🏺🧪🦣 Was more than happy to speak to @killgrove.bsky.social for this: even if you ignored the horrendous, insurmountable ethical issues, what we'd learn would do almost nothing to advance our understanding of prehistoric #Neanderthal lives, nor our encounters with them.
There's zero justification.
Given all the hype about “de-extincting” animals, could Neanderthals be next? The technology doesn’t currently exist, researchers told me, but could one day. However, it would be an ethical minefield. 🏺🧪
Neanderthals could be brought back within 20 years — but is it a good idea?
With today's technology, we cannot bring back Neanderthals. But even if future advances allow it, should we?

From May: While Bitcoin is designed as a decentralized payment system that bypasses banks and credit cards, its consumption of Texans’ true wealth—the state’s natural resources—is centralized in the hands of a few companies, sucking up massive amounts of water & energy to keep hardware running 24/7.
The Crypto Racket
Bitcoin mining afflicts locals with noise pollution, threatens water supplies, and receives generous public backing.

It’s really absurd that we’ve reached a point where the “common sense” view of education is that its primary purpose is to lower the future onboarding/training costs for companies hiring new employees.
