The scholar who told us all to stop bowling alone would have been bowling alone himself, if not for his wife.
I was on the early team at Meetup, which Scott Heiferman founded in direct response to Bowling Alone. Bob Putnam was an advisor. I remember him admitting that he was a scholarly introvert who left all the social plans to his wife.

20 years on I know that means all the social safety net work, too.

This looks excellent. The ability to keep up with people's new working papers and articles is one of the things that the other place used to be great for. This feed makes it very easy. 👇

We streamlined six new DID-like estimators and created this tutorial for implementation in R.

Hope you no longer need to spend months figuring out what these estimators are and how to use them.

New (open access) publication with @philipp-kerler.bsky.social. We draw on fieldwork to build a theoretical model that outlines the conditions when the expectation of clientelism can drive selective political engagement, something we call asymmetric participation. #distributivepolitics #clientelism

Vale a pena!
Despite patriarchy's persistence, growing numbers of men believe they have it worse off than women. And, new research shows this "male victimhood" ideology is most common among men who aren't facing hardship. Which means what they're really feeling is status loss. 1/

Male victimhood ideology driven by perceived status loss, not economic hardship, among Korean men
Research published in Sex Roles suggests that male victimhood ideology among South Korean men is driven more by perceived socioeconomic status decline rather than objective economic hardship.

It doesn't surprise me that privileged men are more likely to believe (incorrectly) that they're worse off than women or to blame feminism for the challenges they face. As I show in Holding It Together, dude-fluencers push this view to keep us divided. 2/
