"Contrary to Miller and Trump, Lakanwal’s shooting spree is not the result of importing Afghan culture to America. While much will surely be revealed in Lakanwal’s upcoming trial, it looks more like the result of importing American culture to Afghanistan." New from me @zeteo.com
He Killed for the CIA in Afghanistan. Trump Blames Afghan Culture Instead of Langley’s
After the National Guard shooting, the US needs to reckon with how its legacy of global violence inevitably comes home. Stephen Miller wants to do anything but.

The DC shooting story is really getting to me because we literally trained this man as a child soldier for a death squad in a forever war and Stephen Miller et al want to blame it on other cultures? It's our culture, American culture, that killed that woman.

Is there a tl;dr on how Ray Dalio came to be viewed as a sort of macroeconomic oracle? He seems to have replaced Buffet as the one investor whose views are regularly all over the media. Did he get some predictions right that everyone else got wrong?

I know the No Kings movement, such as it is, lacks any critique or program more nuanced than "Orange Man Bad," and the optics of the new rococo East Wing play right into their narrative, but I still have found the reaction to this series of events profoundly depressing.

The only reasonable policy response to this is to make all of downtown Brooklyn and Brooklyn Heights into a pedestrian/bike/bus only zone. No cars north of Atlantic and west of Flatbush unless on the BQE or an approach to one of the bridges. static1.squarespace.com/static/61f01...

It occurs to me that there's a type of internet guy who puts out a steady stream of content, say on youtube, despite regularly getting view counts in the dozens or hundreds.

If NYC was going to have a casino, the only acceptable location was Hudson Yards. That place is already blighted. Since they voted that down, all the proposals should get squashed.

Ok. Full disclosure the source of this is Phil Magness, and yes, I know, but it's still pretty funny.

Will all the free marketers who have been pointing at Argentina as vindication say anything now that the US is going to have to step in to bail out Milei or nah?

I am not any kind of free speech absolutist but it was always clear to me that people who claimed to be were always a greater threat to free speech than the people they opposed in its name. If that wasn't clear to you, but you get it now, this is the time to engage in some public self flagellation.

This is probably hyperbolic but it seems to me the most disturbing aspect of the reaction to the killing of Kirk is the way belief formation surrounding it seems to be a microcosm for everything wrong with how people make sense of the world these days.

Paul should've invoked Ruby Ridge if he wanted to make this point in language his supporters would understand.

I have federal jury duty next week, which whatever, sure, but so far it's been postponed once and I get the feeling it might get postponed day after day for several days... and my productivity next week might go through the roof as I cancel my meetings in waves.

It's not a perfect analogy but I've landed on comparing MAGA's Epstein meltdown to the Night of the Long Knives. The conspiracy theorists are its SA. The main axis of the comparison is the need for the party in power to disown its less socially acceptable fringe, despite owing its power to them.

The 14th Street Busway has been a smashing success: faster commutes, fewer crashes, calmer streets.

So why is Eric Adams blocking a similar plan for 34th Street?
