RT if you’ve been saying for 15 years that the Harvard elite is like this but you were constantly shouted down by “leftists” with ties to Harvard

Calder’s Circus (currently at the Whitney) is one of my favorite things I’ve ever seen at a museum.

Go see it! (Unless you hate fun)

Like I’m sorry but…

“roar of fascism and being crushed under capitalism leaves us depleted and unable to do anything but continue to grind” 🤪🤪🤪🤪

Your husband is a consultant and you were literally just handed $200,000 of other people’s money you embittered cosplaying psychopath

The point of having tenure is getting $228,000 of Canadian taxpayer money to make a shitty 6-minute short film, spending your free time being evil and trying to destroy an undocumented immigrant’s income, and still constantly whining about how overworked you are like a pathetic bourgeois infant.

You probably should have spent your weekend working instead of wasting it DMing people to lie about being harassed, Karen.

I wrote 6500 words this weekend, because my heart isn’t full of shame and evil.

OK, 1, how did I spend so many years studying gender and sexuality without ever hearing about this

2, it turns out my lecture series are not very long at all!

I’m Freudian enough to find confirmation in the word Saussure chooses to analyze - “barbarians.” Hmmmm.

Isn’t it a funny coincidence how Saussure’s example, in context, neatly reproduces the Ancient Greeks own racial biases about how the languages of foreigners sound compared to their own? 🤔

He also ignores a simple fact that pretty much annihilates his thesis: the ancient Greeks struggled to figure out how to express vowel length in their graphic system, and different areas decided on different conventions.

The fact that the Greeks learned to write from the Phoenicians is not a new discovery.

Herodotus explicitly says so in the Histories (V.58):

But then it gets much worse in the appendix on phonology:

“The Greek alphabet is an ingenious discovery that was later handed down to the Romans…A one-to-one ratio between sounds and graphs…was realized almost completely by the Greeks. Other nations did not grasp this principle.”

It starts with this astonishing statement in Ch VI of the Introduction, which already made my eyebrows rise.

In my lectures on the early Greek philosophers this summer, I discussed how scholarship on Ancient Greece is deeply skewed by ideology, because the fantasy of Ancient Greece is a pillar of European racism.

Here’s an example from a surprising source: Saussure’s Course in General Linguistics
