I guess what I mean to say is the concept of "Holiday Fic" and the referenced cheesiness therein as a stock trope of this fic genre feels like something that is distinctly Christian influenced.

Like a Purim fic should probably be campy or hedonistic or sharply witty, not cloying. A dia de los muertos fic doesn't need to be cloying. Neither does Qing Ming or Mid-Autumn festival fic. Any of them *could* be, but that would be a writer's choice. The saccharine holiday fic feels specific.

See but like...I feel like the "cloying"-ness is inherently tied to the Hallmark-Christmas pastiche that most people write for "Holiday" fic. Loads of holidays exist and have different vibes — and cloying might even be a harsh contrast to accurately convey the holiday in question.

One of my roommates insisted on putting up her Christmas tree at the beginning of this month instead of waiting until after Thanksgiving. Target started stocking Christmas stuff before Halloween was done. It's just exhausting!!

(That last part literally happened last year. I had TWO desk menorahs. AND a happy Chanukah banner hanging.)

...I'm actually tempted to write a one shot of this, day at the restaurant (dafan wen/WWX owned???) Where Absolutely No One Is Celebrating Anything. It's a secular miracle. 😂 I bet I could intercut with some fun historical facts of this tradition.

It's the best Jewish American tradition of patronizing your neighbors who also don't celebrate Xmas's business by going and getting Chinese food tbh. 🥡🤝🏼

Tasty solidarity.
