I wrote a new piece for foreign policy.

The US's postwar role as guarantor of Europe’s security is over – and may even turn adversarial. But Europe has an overlooked trump card.

When it comes to manufacturing Europe blows the US out of the water.

Thread.

Good. And unsurprising

France and Britain are drawing up plans to create a “reassurance force” that would rely on western air power, backed by the US, to enforce any ceasefire deal in Ukraine and deter potential Russian aggression.

🇩🇰 Denmark today increases the defence budget with 50bn DKK (6.7bn EUR) plus 10bn DKK (1.3bn EUR) extra per year until 2033 going 2.4% of GDP in 2024 to 3.2% in 2025. As discussed probably 50bn more is needed for acquisition.

Europe must now start the painful process of “de-risking” its relationship with the US, looking for areas of dangerous dependence on America and stripping them out of the system.

Putin will want sanctions relief on finance, where Trump may well deal, but mostly on hydrocarbons, where he won’t. POTUS is committed to maintaining high enough oil prices to incentivize investment in US fields, and to keeping Russian gas out of Europe, in order to sell US LNG.

lungo ma interessante post di Sam Greene sulla posizione dei Paesi UE (e UK) e dell'Ucraina rispetto ai negoziati tra Trump e Putin.
Ok folks, deep breaths.

There is very real reason to worry about the dynamic emerging between Washington and Moscow when it comes to Ukraine. But there is also very real reason to believe that Ukraine and Europe can create a better outcome.

(A rather long 🧵, obviously)

The Netherlands is no longer Germany's 17th federal state in economic terms.

New Commission research shows that once strong NL-DE correlations in macro variables (GDP, investment) have become insignificant.

A couple of observations on the stunning divergence between the frugal bulwarks.

🚨🇳🇴Norway's Hammerfest/Melkøya LNG, the largest exporting terminal in Europe, is extending the ongoing outage.
The plant, with a 6.5 million tons/year of capacity, equal to 5% of Norwegian gas exports, will be out until January 19.

While still early, this shows an understanding that no single EU country can actually hope for a special relationship with the US that would safeguard it. Italy missing here, as Meloni keeps clinging on a strictly bilateral link that might never deliver.
