there is a huge gulf between giving every single adult a fighting rifle and the right to self defense. like personally I am 1000x more likely to commit suicide or impulsively murder someone. I don’t want to own a gun. It’s a bad idea for me.

In Missouri, the state maintains outdoor shooting ranges that are unsupervised and open to the public. At least in the ~south, I have never seen even a whisper of what you describe as common.
