Assad is a bloodthirsty war criminal. Since he has reportedly left Syria, a few thoughts on exile. In short: He's not necessarily safe just because he has managed to survive another day

The regime of Bashar al-Assad has fallen.

Syria has been liberated.

I've already seen Syria used as vindication of the idea you can in fact "remake the Middle East" through force.

But Assad's fall, the weakening of Hezbollah, the humbling of Iran have not remade anything.

They are the equivalent of re-breaking a bone that was poorly set.

It still must re-heal.

I was preparing to pitch an op-ed on the nationwide protests calling for President Yoon's resignation, aiming to provide global context amid the limited international coverage.

Given the urgency, I’m sharing it now. I didn’t expect events to escalate this quickly. #SouthKorea #Democracy

This is the major question: Does the SK military have the stomach to directly counter an act of the legislature and then repress the popular response?

Fingers crossed that they do not.

Anyways, back to working on my research on military interventions in democracies.

The next time you hear a pundit scold the “alarmists” for their “hysterical” warnings about threats to democracy, remember that Trump is nominating some utterly extreme figures who swear fealty to him and urgently desire to use state power to deliver vengeance against a long list of enemies.
@timmiller.bsky.social published Kash Patel's "Executive Branch Deep State" list, originally an appendix to his "Government Gangsters" book, and posted it on xitter.

50+ current and former officials who Patel intends to target.

I'm on it, for my 3 months of government service.

When it comes down to it, democracy often hinges on whether the military will go along with an authoritarian or defend democratic principles.
That is why authoritarians seek to put loyalists at the top of the military, and why we should be worried about military purges in the US.
