By sending low-voltage electrical currents through the ground and measuring how the current flows between electrodes, electrical resistivity tomography reveals variations in underground resistivity. These measurements are combined to create a detailed resistivity profile of subsurface materials.

Another chapter in the enshittification of US Govt websites: USGS Earth Explorer no longer has a satellite data basemap (which for a geospatial search tool is kinda useful) and also outside of the US, you can't even zoom very far. How is this saving money or making things more efficient? 🧪⚒️

The other thing is that scientific research gives people who are both smart and really motivated to change the world something to do other than politics. Do they really want a lot of unoccupied scientific talent? Because that's how you get evil lairs in volcanos and sharks with lasers.

In case anyone was wondering why the government was so heavily invested in scientific research (pre-DOGE) here is a clear explanation from one of the workers on the chopping block:
A Reddit post by user Throwawayainteasy: I get exhausted trying to explain this stuff to people who fundamentally don't understand pure scientific research. It's mostly not profitable, at least in the short-term. Some of the most important scientific breakthroughs are things that we won't really understand the value of until 10-20 years from now or more. Possibly generations. That's just the nature of science. It can even be true for the seemingly mundane stuff. In the 60s someone gets curious how flies can get around so well with such tiny brains, that answer turns into new understandings, those understandings merge with new computing, and in the 2020s we have autonomous drones and self driving cars who's existence is rooted all the way back to someone's unheralded research that started because they thought bugs were neat. No for-profit company would fund the first 20 steps in that process, because there's no clear path to profitability until the end. That's why governments across the world are the primary funders of pure research.

I finally got my film developed from the last USGS Trip to PR where we did Seismic Lines in South and South-Western Puerto Rico.

PRSN truck out in Lajas Valley fault hunting. Line of geophones in a farm in Salinas, PR GPS HAT! for taking precise shot and station locations. Salinas, PR. Hi Bill! 50lb forced hammer drop, attached to the back of a rented truck. Used to create shot records for a reflection study.

As a reminder, scientists do not receive royalties when someone accesses, downloads, or reads their papers. All proceedings go exclusively to the publisher.
Nor do they get paid for reviewing or (mostly) editing other people's papers for a journal.
Yes, its sucks, and it's broken.

This is the Network of the Americas (NOTA). Upwards of 1000 high quality GPS stations used to monitor all big active faults that produce the biggest most damaging earthquakes as well as volcanoes from Mt. St. Helens to Yellowstone, etc. Every single on of them is grant funded.
