Ghilan’nain does her best work just after dawn, when a silo of easterly, risen sun enters a natural aperture in the cave’s ceiling and cuts between dripping stalactites to illuminate the slab of stone where her reagents are laid. A bowl of azurite ground to powder so fine it stirs with her breath. Shavings from leafless, tangled herbs the color of ash. Thick glass flasks filled with mixtures of honey and bear fat. The scents waken her fully, though she keeps the night’s dreams near; it is from those boundless, extraordinary imaginings she draws inspiration to create.
