I'm a few rounds into Ouroboros King and really liking it. Visually it sticks close to a typical chess UI, it makes it very easy to check how pieces move (mousing over shows their possible target squares) and the opponent engine is fairly forgiving so far.

Yeah honestly if you're making normal chess just grab an existing open source chess engine (stockfish is right there)

However. I decided to make Wacky chess with items and stuff.

Meaning I'm writing all the AI from scratch.

One move! 4 outcomes! Did you consider that while making all of your BASE LEVEL LOGIC??? "Oh I'll just have it be 4 different types of pawn pushes--" IT'S NOT JUST THE PUSHES IT COULD BE A CAPTURE AS WELL. YOU WERE DOOMED THE VERY FIRST STEP YOU TOOK!!!

"I'll just automatically turn them into queens for now and add the others later" you've already dug your own grave.

Though now I have to check whether Passant overlaps a lot with my design so far and I'm a little scared to take a look...

Sokpop, probably the BDG video I'm guessing? But patreon is also beholden to mastercard/visa...

Is that feasible for gamedev? I could see some indies returning to hosting their own site/download but for paid projects you'd be getting into the same weeds again...
