Semi-retired forester, nature lover, cat dude, Democrat. Live in Georgia, spend summers in Pacific Northwest.

All pics are my own. I'm not a pro; I just like to share what I've seen.

Unlike some tree species, the ginkgo tree loses its leaves quickly. The leaves turn yellow, and soon find their way to the ground. These photos were taken three days apart.

Ten years ago today, I was on my way to Georgia after 5 months of working in the Northwest. I visited Alley Spring, part of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. My family often camped there when I was young.

When Narvik was crouched in the leaf pile, I decided to take a video of him playing in the leaves. This is what I ended up with.

For #WaterfallWednesday, a pic from my one and only visit to Niagara Falls, in 2005. In general, I prefer waterfalls that are off the beaten path, but the falls at Niagara are worth seeing for their sheer size and power.

The local park where I ride my bike has added a trail, and made improvements to a parking area. I'll be going there this afternoon when it warms up a bit.

Lost among the leaves. I raked leaves yesterday, and of course Narvik had to investigate.

For #ThickTrunkTuesday, a tree in my own back yard. This loblolly pine is 33 inches in diameter and more than 100 feet tall.

Yesterday I was trying to take pictures of freshly fallen leaves from a mulberry tree. Narvik chose that moment to decide that he wanted attention.

How do these leaves from the same genus measure up? In my yard, I have a southern magnolia - that's the evergreen species with the showy white flowers - plus an umbrella magnolia, which has huge deciduous leaves. Here's how they compare.

Here is another view from yesterday's walk along the Ocmulgee River in Georgia. In the South, the hardwood trees do not turn colors all at once. The color change is spread over several months. This was the most colorful patch I saw.

Fall colors along the Ocmulgee River in Georgia this morning. Trees in the foreground are Chinese tallow. Colorful, but invasive.

In honor of the Sandwich Guy, here is a pic from my 2016 archives. I stopped at a fast food restaurant in Mountain Home, Idaho on a very hot day. These dried-up tomato slices were in the parking lot.

When Narvik makes his rounds of the yard, he often checks this pile of old boards. Ground squirrels like to hide there. They hide well enough that Narvik can't catch them.

Seen along a trail in upstate South Carolina. Someone created a mini-waterfall, using a magnolia leaf held down by a rock.
