It's #pieday today...so let's talk about eel pie!

Eel pie has been an important English food for a long time. Medieval cookbooks often included eel pie recipes, & everyone from peasants to kings at them.

In 1256, Henry III demanded eel pies from his bailiff at Fetcham! 1/7🗃️🧪

Henry's hair is elegantly wavy around his narrow face. His face is pointed straight ahead, but the pupils of his eyes are pointed upwards, presumably towards god. The way his beard is drawn makes is look like chin is melting. He's wearing a red shirt and blue cape, and is holding a model of a cathedral in his left hand. His demeanor and expression look very much like an Irish Setter ignoring a physics lecture.

The bishops, in brown robes and mitres, each have a hand on the kings crown. They are, clearly, meant to be setting it on his head. But the scene is more interesting if we assume that they are trying to steal it. Think: Indiana Jones replacing an idol with a bag of sand. I hope they can outrun a boulder.

Lent begins this week. And if you're a medieval English abbot that means one thing: eel-rents!

At the start of Lent tenants all over England came to pay their yearly rent in eels. Hundreds of thousands of eels.

But how? Why?

More like he's seen a piece of cheese, and the abbot can't quite recall when last he had cheese. Later, idly, he'll pick it up and realize that it's lint from his socks.

You know? I still find it remarkably easy to remain patriotic throughout this administration.

Trump and the MAGA crowd are a repudiation of every single civic ideal that the United States is meant to represent—and I see no reason to stop believing in those ideals because of them.
